Plug-in Failure Safari Flash

Hi,

I have been having this strange error trying to open flash content on internet I get: Plug-in Failure badge.

Flash only works on chrome. Safari, Firefox & Opera cant play flash.

Flash version: 11.8.800.94

Safari: 6.0.5

OSX: 10.8.4

Tryed:

  1. compleatly removing flash and everything adobe from computer and reinstaling
  2. removed java
  3. removed all plugins and exstensions
  4. removed all browsers except safari (because I cant)
  5. cleaned disk & repaired disk permissions & repaired disk
  6. reinstalled combo update with the latest safari 6.0.5

Now the funny thing is that after instalation of flash you get this page: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/completion/aih/?exitcode=0&type=install - it automaticly opens in chrome and chrome is not a default browser.

When i uninstaled chrome it wouldnt open anything after instalation, and after reinstaling chrome and uninstaling and instaling adobe again it again opend the page in chrome???

Please if anyone has any ideas help.

I had this problem since I updated flash player some time ago (about a month).

Also! : I would love to try the older version of flash player (like 10.3.) but safari blockes it. Is there any way I can unblock older versions?

I found that I need to move flash from internet plug-ins (blocked) to normal internet plugins folder but I dont get internet plug-ins (blocked) folder.

If you're sure you've installed the latest version of Flash, take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. After each step, relaunch Safari and test. For a "missing plug-in" error, start with Step 4.

1. If you're getting a "blocked plug-in" error, then from the menu bar select

ïŁż â–č System Preferences
 â–č Flash Player â–č Advanced

and click Check Now. Quit and relaunch your browser.

2. Triple-click the line below to select it:

/Library/Internet Plug-Ins

Right-click or control-click the highlighted text and select

Services â–č Open

from the contextual menu. A folder should open. Delete the following item, or anything with a similar name, if present:

Flash Player (failing).plugin

You may be prompted for your login password.

3. Re-download and reinstall Flash. Download it from this page:

Never download a Flash update from anywhere else.

4. If you get a " missing plug-in" error, select

Safari â–č Preferences... â–č Security

from the Safari menu bar and check the box marked Enable plug-ins.

5. Select

Safari â–č Preferences... â–č Extensions

from the Safari menu bar. If any extensions are installed, disable them.

6. In the Safari preference window, select

Privacy â–č Remove All Website Data

Close the window. Then select

ïŁż â–č System Preferences
 â–č Flash Player â–č Advanced

and click Delete All. Close the preference pane.

Hi, tnx for the reply.

I have tryed that already, and I have tryed deliting flash from adobe flash uninstaler, but since I got nothing to lose I tryed again and no luck.

Under Internet Plugins I got:
Flash Player.plugin

flashplayer.xpt

I delited both and reinstalled and its the same. And again after instalation it opend google chrome on adobe website congratulating me on instalation. I dont get it. Where does flash player get its settings for default browser? Because mine is Safari and not crome, so why would it open chrome instead?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Aug 19, 2013 12:00 PM in response to imatic

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.

These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.

Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.

Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.

Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go â–č Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.

Step 1

Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:

kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.

Step 2

Repeat with this line:

{ sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef

This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.

Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.

Step 3

{ launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef

Step 4

ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef

Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.

Step 5

osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -ef

Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.

You can then quit Terminal.

Your system is so heavily modified that, instead of trying to remove the modifications piecemeal, you should erase your boot volume, reinstall OS X, and then go through the initial setup process, importing only your user data and settings from backup — not applications or other files.

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with a mirroring tool such as Carbon Copy Cloner. Preferably both. You must be certain that you can restore everything to the state it's in now.

Note that if you're running in safe mode, you can't connect to a Time Capsule or other network volume. You'll have to back up to a locally-attached hard drive.

Boot into Recovery, launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume with the default options. This operation will destroy all data on the volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups.

Quit Disk Utility and install OS X. If you upgraded from an older version of OS X, you'll need the Apple ID and password that you used to purchase the upgrade from the App Store, so make a note of those before you begin.

When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process in Setup Assistant. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups. For a description, see here.

Transfer only "Users" and "Settings" – not "Applications" or "Other files." Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.

After that, run Software Update.

If the problem is resolved after the clean installation, reinstall your third-party software selectively. I can only suggest general guidelines. Self-contained applications that install into the Applications folder by drag-and-drop or download from the App Store are usually safe. Anything that comes packaged as an installer or that prompts for an administrator password is suspect, and you must test thoroughly after reinstalling each such item to make sure you haven't restored the problem.

I recommend that you never reinstall commercial "anti-virus" products or "utilities," if they're packaged as an installer.

Before installing any software, ask yourself the question: "Am I sure I know how to uninstall this without having to wipe the volume again?" If the answer is "no," stop.

Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.

Aug 19, 2013 12:35 PM in response to Linc Davis

Hey thank you, I realy appreciate you took the time for this but reinstall just isn't an option for me.

I have to much plugins and musical instruments vsts and other stuff I would take me a week to get everything back in place and setup as it is...

Is there no other way? I mean after all this is osx not windows :/

And how can something be affecting flash while everything else is working just fine?

Aug 19, 2013 12:43 PM in response to imatic

There's a long list of components of system modifications above. I've never used any of them, and some I've never even heard of. One or more of them is causing your problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination. If you don't start with a clean installation, that process will probably take even longer.

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.

Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.

You may have to log out or reboot in order to complete an uninstallation.

If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X.

Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software.

Ok Linc Davis, thank you very much for all the help!
I found alot of programs on the list I had to paste, that I wasnt using anymore and that are not even on the system anymore.

I took the time and cleand my drive folder by folder with: OmniDiskSweeper

And it works! I reinstaled flash and it works!
