Using Airport Express (wired) for AirPlay only

Hi everyone,

I am looking to setup an Airport Express to stream AirPlay out through its minijack to an amplifier. This has already been partially in addressed in some older threads, but I'm not having luck finding a solution for my specific situation where the Airport Express is connected physically (i.e., via an ethernet cable) to my Airport Extreme Base Station. I do not want to have the Airport Express doing anything with WIFI ... in fact I'd like to have it turned off if at all possible.

On some other Apple threads and other internet sites, there are some proposed solutions, but none of them are current for the most recent Airport Admin utility and/or Airport Express firmware.

Thanks in advance for any advice. I've been researching this for hours and can't believe I haven't found a solution yet!

I should add the while I am working on this, I have removed everything from the 24-port switch except for the AEBS and the airport express. These are the only two things plugged into the switch right now.

My imac is in the same room as the AEBS so I have it plugged in directly into AEBS.

I want to do something just like this, with one difference: I have a Google Fiber router that serving as the DHCP host. My AEBS is hooked up to it via ethernet, and so the AEBS is hosting my wireless network. No ethernet ports on the AEBS are being used. Via the Google Fiber router and several switches, I have an Express I want to hook up via ethernet to ONLY use AirPlay. As such, the Express will be hard wired through the Fiber router, not the AEBS. Is this possible? I'm concerned that if I hook the Express up via the LAN port and turn wireless off, it won't actually be on my wireless network and as such AirPlay won't work. Any help would be appreciated.

Another advantage to turning off Airport Express wireless (if you don't really need it) is that the device doesn't seem to get as warm -- which would mean it's using less power. (Save the planet). Going a step further, you could plug it into a switched outlet on your amp, if it has one like mine does -- so that the Airport Express is only on at all when it's needed.
