Occassional Thud + Hard Drive Whir?

I purchased a stock 1.83 Macbook at an Apple Store last weekend and think that it's a great machine in all regards but one. No overheating, no whining, heard the moo once faintly when the fans were getting really fired up... the keyboard and display are great, small and lightweight, putting in 2 GB of ram makes it fly, etc.

Unfortunately, it's been plagued with a strange phenomemenon: occasionally, the computer emits a small thud and the hard drive spins for a split second. It happens once every 30 seconds to 3 minutes, just often enough to be really annoying in a quiet room. This is not the computer accessing anything; the computer will be sitting totally idle on the desktop and just beep + whir. It happens when idling/running in safe mode and still occurs after doing both an archived reinstall of Tiger and a total reformat and reinstall of Tiger.

It happens both before and after the Apple software updates and occurs when idling, browsing, chatting, etc. It happens when Bluetooth and Wireless are disabled, and all external devices are unplugged from the computer. It is fairly quiet, so it's not an issue when listening to music, but muting the volume doesn't solve the problem, leading me to guess that it might be a hardware problem. This is, however, just a guess.

I spent a few hours on the phone with different AppleCare representatives, including an expert to whom I was referred after calling in 3 times about this same issue, but none of them could come up with any other instances of this occuring or any real insight other than "Take it into a store and have someone look at it, since the problem is difficult to diagnose over the phone." I do plan on taking it to an Apple Store but was wondering if anyone else experienced this problem and found a solution? Thanks in advance.

I say just take it to the store. Tell them you're afraid your hard drive is going to blow up or something. "I think it's going to crash. Boo Hoo..." See if they will have it replaced for you.

Good luck!

Anyone else come to any resolution with this?

AppleTalker, how do you know for sure it was the HDD
itself? I wonder why people with different make
drives are experiencing this. Different companies
putting out drives that do the same, weird things?

I posted another thread looking for answers, here:

Thanks for any input...

I have been describing this sound to people as a blip or even a plink sound. Almost like in Lord of the Rings, the way a ring "plinks" down a distant well hitting the ground. It's definately coming from under the keyboard, but I can't quite locate top left, top right, bottom left or bottom right. If I had to decide, I'd say top left but just not positive. The sound is intermittant. Usually it happens about once a minute, but sometimes three minutes goes by before it does it. Sometimes a few seconds, then it does it again.

I took it to Apple retail store today. They issued a repair ticket and recommended changing the Main Logic Board (MLB). (I think mostly because it was my second visit due to intermittant kernal panics). But ohhhhhh those annoying blip sounds are what really bother me. I feel like I'm being tortured with an ancient chinese water drip. I hope the logic board replacement solves the plinks or I don't know what I'll do.

I read about a guy on another blog indicating they're swapping out new MLBs and shipping newer installation DVDs and it solved the guy's whine sound (although mine doesn't whine. Maybe it would fix the blips...PLEASE, GOD.

I'll post again after the repair sometime next week.

Hmm, see, this contradicts the report from somebody before that the sound went away after a HDD swap, BUT, is more in line with what I suspect to be the problem, which is not the HDD but something with the firmware. I guess a MB swap might also do the trick, if the new MB has a diff/newer firmware. I dunno.

Anyway, I'm going to be doing a MAJOR overhaul to my MacBook once I'm back in the US (end of this month) because my MacBook has all of these well documented problems:

1) The clink/thud, reported in this thread
2) Kernel panicks when pulling out the headphone/speaker jack
3) Random shutdowns with "Previous Shutdown Cause: -70" reports.
4) The "Moo"
5) The floating top bezel
6) And is that a hint of discoloration that I see on the palmrest?

I'm guessing a lot of components will be replaced and will let you know if any of it helps get rid of the thud.

Can I add my belated 2c?

I have a 2004 12" PowerBook. ABout 2 months ago I replaced the standard 60GB HDD with a 100GB Hitachi from Other World Computing. Guess what - click, whirr. OWC could only suggest the drive was faulty, but I was sure it was not a typical mechanical failure noise. I came to these forums and found others with a similar problem.

I have tried APM Tuner as suggested, and this does fix the problem. However, setting the slider all the way to the right means the HDD NEVER spins down, so when I run the PB on battery the machine never goes to sleep.

It's definitely the sound described though - "plink" head-parking noise, then a whirr as the drive spins up. Then it gradually slows down again (but never stops).

I a going to say it is definitely the hard drive. I just replaced my Stock Toshiba drive in my MacBook (60GB) with a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 160GB and it was fine for the first day and now I have this intermittent clicking sound when I am not doing much on the system. Something is not right. I am going to try calling the place I bought it and get another one. I bought it through a reputable eBay store and it is an Apple logod part, meaning Apple puts it in their systems.

Very annoyed as I just got everything setup how I like it, and now I have to do it all over again.

UPDATE: I just swapped the seagate out for my stock drive and put the seagate into an enclosure. The Toshiba makes this sound too, it's just I never noticed it before because the Toshiba drive is noticeably quieter. if I put my ear to the drive I can hear the occasional every so many second tock or click. The thing is that sometimes when I hear it in the internal drive, the external drive makes the sound too at the same time. I wonder if this just isnt a normal sound for a Laptop drive? Either that or is a problem with the MB itself. Perhaps something in the controller chipset or firmware...

This is very frustrating. Previously I had this thud noise on hard drive which was about 4 month old, I thought it was hard drive failure. So, I purchased a new one and same noise occur which is 6 days old hard drive. Therefore, I believe that it's not the hard drive issue. Has anyone come up with the solution to get rid of this unnoying thud noise?
