Is it possible to extend a non Apple router network using an Airport Express?

I have an old Linksys WRT54GL router (version 1.1) firmware version v4.30.7 that I would like to get back in to service, as it has VPN support and custom firmware options.

I would like to free up the two Airport Express I own and put them to use purely as network extenders/AirPlay boxes, but despite the fact that Linksys (apparently) released WDS (Wireless Distribution System) support a while ago, setting up the AX as a network extender is looking impossible.

It seems the problem is not with the Linksys, but rather with Airport Utility, which seems to be a result of Apple simplifying the setup options.

I would really appreciate any suggestions on this.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Bob you're the man that works! However when I go back to AirPort Utility it doesn't prompt me to create a bridge network or to do anything else it looks all set up. However it does give me the option to create an network with the settings there is for the Verizon router or to extend the network, which option should I choose for those settings that the AirPort Utility now has?

First off can I email you personally so I can include screenshots of what I am seeing?

If not I understand.

I mean once I get the AX setup via my iPhone wifi settings as a airport express with the same settings as the first verizon cable modem/router, do I then open airport utility app and setup a new network? Bc it already appears as a network when I open airport utility app, however it doesn't prompt me to set it as a bridge like you mentioned it should. However if I do open that network and ch k in the settings there is a option to have it be a new network or to be added to an existing network.

Again this second router which is AX is in my apartment hard liked via cat5 cable to my friends apartment down the hall who has the verizon cable modem/router. This allows us to share the internet cost. However his wireless doesn't reach and is why I ran the cat5 cable from him to me into my AX to act as a wireless access point for my wireless devices. I would like to know if I can somehow configure my AX so that he(my friend) can't access my devices. I wAs told by someone that a managed switch would work. Thoughts? Anything else?

Thanks

Mike

You are asking for two different things.

On the one hand, you are asking if you can extend the wireless network signal from the Verizon network through the AirPort. When you extend, both routers will have the same wireless network name, and same wireless network password.

In effect, you have one "big" wireless network. You will be on the same network as the Verizon network. You will see devices on the Verizon network and users on the Verizon portion of the network will see your devices. This is what happens when you extend a network. It is the same network.

On the other hand, you are asking if you can configure your AX so your friend cannot see the devices that are connected your AX. That would not be an extended network. That would be an independent network.

The iPhone is meant for simple setups, ideally Apple to Apple devices. You will not be able to set up the AX with an iPhone if you want an independent network. You will need a Mac or PC.

Technically, to do what you want for an independent network, you will need to configure the Express in a non-standard way. This may or may not work, so there will be no guarantees of success.

If the AX is working now....you say that it is set up....then you might want to leave well enough alone.

If you want to try a non-standard setup.....with no guarantees that it will work....and you have a Mac or PC, post back to tell us what operating system that the computer is using.

Hi Bob -

Hoping you can help here. My cable company / ISP has given me an Arris DG-2470 https://www.arris.com/globalassets/resources/data-sheets/dg2470a_ds.pdfcombo modem/2-channel router (2.4 and 5GHz.) Previously with a standalone cable modem I was using an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express as an extender. I want to re-add the two Apple routers now to boost signal strength throughout the house.

I've connected my Airport Extreme via ethernet to the Arris and am using Airport Utility 5.6.1 to configure per your instructions. I am at the point where I've switched the AirportExt to bridge mode, and now being told that there are "No DNS Servers".

Please advise. Thank you in advance for your help!
