The tag on my inbox says I have 187 messages, but I can only see one. What to do?

I sat down at my iMac to check my mail, yet there is only one message showing in my inbox. The tag on my inbox icon says I have 187 messages: where are they? Note: There is nothibg typed in my search bar.

Oh, is this POP or IMAP?

This did not help. I made a new mailbox for unread email, but nothing shows in it at all. Besides, I need to see all the read emails that I have saved over the past couple of years. I cannot find anything; read or unread. As it turns out this is not dire because I can access my email through the Comcast site, but that is less than convienent.😠

Thanks anyway.
