So Chris CA's answer is to do absolutely nothing!

Seems you cannot read & comprehend.

To use a "simple intuitive Apple-like way to lock my screen during phone calls", you do not need to do anything except hold the phone to your face during a phone call.

If the screen does not turn off, your phone is not functioning correctly.

Remove any case or screen cover you may have. If it still fails to turn off, take it to an Apple store for repair.

Some of us don't have a lot of time to learn technical tweaks for something that should be designed in a more user-friendly way...

and yet you are here looking for a technical tweak for something that is designed to work in a more user-friendly way.

Either your phone case is messing it up or your phone is broken.

Why not fix the actual problem instead of trying to skirt the isssue?

Should car manufacturers should include a a big old chain and lock to wrap around your car in case the locks fail to work?

Proxy sensors are great and all, but when you use a case like the Otter Commuter then there is a gap between that sensor and your head. This gap keeps your screen from potentially cracking if your phone is dropped. My previous device was an andriod phone. On that device the way the phone functions work are really similar to the Apple devices with the one exception being the power button can be used to lock the screen while on a call. Also the power button is not used to disconnect a call. To me it seems like a simple software fix, but maybe I'm wrong.

I have a new phone and have the same problem. The Genius Bar confirmed my sensor was working properly. I believe the issue is with a slight alteration of your head and the phone resting on your shoulder, the phone can come back on. A slight brush of your cheek leads to hanging up or face time in my case. As I recall the 4S could be locked with the side buttons (if properly set up). If anyone has any idea how to lock the phone without hanging up, please let us know.

I agree that this us a poor design. Apple should have corrected it at this point. Effectively locking the screen during a call is a major design flaw.

A slide bar should appear on the screen during a call and manually sliding it should unlock the screen, not face recognition.

I have yet to see a touchscreen phone that uses anything but a proximity sensor. The proximity sensor works just fine for 99.9% of people. If yours doesn't, then there's a problem with your hardware, not the design and you should concentrate on resolving your issue.

If you feel strongly about such a design change, you can submit your feedback to Apple here:

Best of luck.

Been having the same issues ......i bought a cover for my phone last week and the problem started then ....i accidentally covered the censor with the new cover ....that was the problem as the sensor is for the face when raised up and this was covered up .. so make sure the cover is correctly in line.

Thanks Iroko999 but I think I have the opposite problem. I want to manually lock my phone while talking on it. My proximity sensor works fine (confirmed at Apple store) but when I speak on the phone with it gently resting on my shoulder, my face is not always close enough to activate the sensor. Unfortunately it is close enough to activate Face Time and Speaker Phone occasionally. With the iPhone 4, you could set your side buttons to "lock screen" and get around this problem. Any suggestion would be welcome. Thanks,

I think 90% of people are missing the point (probably beacuse they have not known anything other than apple). I think the person who originally asked was that when on a call can I manually lock the screen. Now this is a common feature in android phones. I’ll give you a situation that I use the lock button on android, when I want to place the phone in my pocket after answering it while using headphones simply done on android.

Now I bought a separate phone using iPhone 5 and try this application every single time ends calls, Now please don’t reiterate oh just use the sensor that makes the screen go blank, well hello sherlock I’m not putting the phone up to my face I have either bluetooth headset or wired ones and I just want to put the phone elsewhere not my hands, it’s a thing call multitasking unlike new society that always have to have the phone in their hands looking at the screen I would like to for once just talk and work without the screen being on like on the android platform.
