Processes 'Not Responding' & Kernel Panic

I am frequently seeing processes not repsonding in the Activity Monitor. This will happen numerous times a day, mostly with Safari & iPhoto. Less often Mail & Finder are included in the list. I have recently installed Firefox and the 'not respsonding' is less frequent than with Safari. I also had similar improvements with Chrome. I don't have to have both Safari/Firefox & iPhoto open, either will do. Also, playing music in iTunes, after a few tracks the music will pause of its own accord for quite a few seconds.

So, mostly in iPhoto or Safari, the spinning wheel will appear and the activity monitor will show iPhoto/Safari as Not Responing. This may continue for several minutes or more. I am able to swipe left & right to other desktops, but can't do anything in any program. For this reason I'm not able to Force Quit anything. The activity monitor will show cpu at 95% idle and plenty of free memory. After several minutes the programs usually 'wake up' and the force quit option confirmation will appear (if I have tried to initiate it from the Activity Monitor). Programs may then respond normally again, or go back to Not Responding.

If the hang goes on for too long and I power off using the on/off button the machine will more often than not take 10+ minutes to reboot. The apple logo will be on the screen for 5+ minutes and may take a further 5-10 minutes once the Desktop screen appears. Occasionally the apple logo as remained for about 30 minutes.

I have found the situation usually recovers itself better if I don't power off & restart, though sometimes it appears to be the only option.

I have installed more memory (4gb x2). Verified/repaired permissions. The iMac has had a couple of overnight stays in the Genius bar where the hard drive has been stress tested and hardware generally found to be working fine. They guided me through a clean install of OS X.

I don't recall having problems prior to the release of iPhoto '11.

I don't have any diagnostic information from before the OS X install (sorry, didn't realise it existed). Since the install I have:

A kernel panic is very rare for me. I think it's pointing to the graphics card - NVIDAI GeForce 9400 256 MB. But could it also be the cause of the hangs?

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices.

Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This operation will destroy all data on the volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. Quit Disk Utility and install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

When you reboot, the Setup Assistant will launch to take you through the initial setup process. Follow the prompt to transfer the data from one of your backups. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

I have just erased the start up volume and installed OS X. I am transferring my information now. The OS X install did get stuck - probably for about 30 minutes it said "Time remaining: About 13 minutes" - but eventually completed ok.

While information is being transferred from my backup, is there any significance to be placed on the hard drive (FireWire connection) having phases of not flashing for 5-10 minutes at a time? When the hard drive appears not to be being accessed the time remaining is either static or increasing.

No change to iPhoto & Safari - still Not Responding quite often. A spin dump for iPhoto was also generated. Not noticed one before.

Did you ever test in safe mode? If not, I suggest you do that now. If you did, and got the same results, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested for a hardware fault.

I have experienced the problem in safe mode with Safari. I'm not really able to use iPhoto as viewing a whole image just brings up a blank screen. Also in safe mode nearly all memory shows as Wired. Is this normal?

The Genius Bar have done numerous hardware tests and not found a problem, so I appear to have gone full circle now.

No. If all the facts are as you've stated in this thread, I think you have a hardware fault, regardless of what the "Geniuses" said. They're often wrong.

Thanks for all you help with this. As I didn't have any problem before Mountain Lion, I had my fingers crossed that it was going to be a bug in Mountain Lion and all my problems would disappear with Mavericks. 😟

After being back in my local Apple Store for a further 9 days, my iMac has had the hard drive replaced. This appears to have solved my problems.

Tests still didn't show a fault with the original hard drive, but after first trying two logic boards and a new data cable I guess there wasn't much else to try.
