pages app crashing

Just bought pages app for my ipad 2.0. It's running the latest ios and from the start has crashed. It first crashed when I was about to read the document that came with the app about using pages. Happens within seconds of opening ANY document. Even when I try to open a new one. I tried looking on the apple site for info but oddly enough, safari will crash when I try doing that. It also crashes when I try to use the gmail website as well. Those other crashes happened before purchasing and downloading pages. I closed all open apps, did a hard reset of the ipad, uninstalled and reinstalled pages twice but no change in the issue. So glad I paid $10 for an app I can't even use right now. Any thoughts on what to do? I can look at the diagnostics but don't know what it all means. tried turning off icloud to see if that made a difference - nope.

Now just deciding if it's worth the headache to completely start from scratch but with just one app crashing and the gmail website plus whatever apple help page I was on crashing safari, not sure I want to deal with that hassle just yet. Having a word processing app isn't critical for me but I was going to work on random documents here and there at work when I have a chance. Just would have hoped that a native app would have worked fine. Maybe an update will come along with the new iOS rumored to be released later this month...assuming my ipad2 will be compatible with that

What other documents do you have in the Pages app? Where did you download these documents from? If you have multiple documents in there, one of those files could be the culprit - or at least that would make sense to me. This will take some time and work, but you can give it a try.

Log into your iCloud.com account on the Mac but don't open Pages on the Mac - if you have the Pages app. Click on the Pages icon in iCloud. Download all of the the documents from iCloud onto the Mac and then delete them from iCloud.com. Include the tutorial file in this experiment. Download it and delete it from iCloud. Close the browser, quit Pages completely on the iPad again, restart your iPad and then try launching Pages on the iPad again.

If Pages opens without crashing, then I assume that one of the files is corrupt. You can try opening them one at a time on the Mac - or uploading them to iCloud again one at a time and just keep trying Pages on the iPad as you go along. When the app crashes again, you can assume that the last file that you uploaded is the corrupt app.

I don't have the Pages app on my Mac. I only downloaded it yesterday for the first time. I don't have any other documents in Pages other than the one that came with it and the test documents I opened to see if it was just an issue with the "getting started" document that came with the ipad app. I haven't tried opening any of my files from my computer on Pages at all yet.

That's why I am suggested that you remove all of the documents from Pages using iCloud and then start the app "fresh". You don't have to open the documents on the Mac, just download them into a folder on the desktop in order to clear everything out of Pages. You do have to turn iCloud on with Pages in the settings in Settings>Pages>Use iCloud>On so that all of the files that you have in the Pages app will upload to iCloud.

Then you can go into iCloud.com, download them all so that you have copies of the files on the Mac and then delete them from iCloud. If the documents are just test files and you don't really need them, then don't even download them, just delete them in iCloud.com.

What are these "test" documents that you are talking about. You can only open certain files types in Pages. You can open Pages documents and .doc and .docx files. We're you trying to open another file type?

The "test" documents are docs I create within the Pages app on the iPad. So I open Pages app then click "create new" and once that opens, it immediately crashes. The app doesn't crash until a document is opened. I haven't even tried yet to import any of my documents because it crashes even with documents made within the iPad app itself. I don't want this app damaging any of my files. Does that make sense? And when I logged into iCloud on my Mac via safari, there were no documents to delete. It was empty.

It makes perfect sense now. I didn't know if you were trying to open documents, nest that you had already tried to save into Pages from an email, or creating your own docs, or whatever. That is what I was trying to determine.

It also makes sense that you have no files in iCloud.com now that you have explained what you were doing.

You have deleted the app and reinstalled it, you have reset all settings on the iPad, you have closed all apps and you have reset the iPad itself (hold downing on the sleep and home buttons) numerous times and none of that is working.

I just can't think of any good reason why the app keeps crashing on you unless something in the iOS software is corrupt now and I certainly have no idea what that would be. If Pages was corrupt when you downloaded it the first time, then after having downloaded it again a couple of times, it would make no sense that the download keeps getting corrupted.

I am stumped now. The last thing that you can try - or the last thing that I can think of now - would be to backup your iPad, restore to factory settings, and then restore from the backup. I would delete Pages again before restoring and download it again after you are finished restoring. This takes some time to do, but if you you so it correctly, you won't lose anything at all. I restored my iPad software recently and it cleared up the issues that I was experiencing.

So I wiped clean the ipad...and safari still crashes on the gmail website! In the meantime, apple refunded me for pages and yet I was still able to download pages...and it still crashes as soon as I try to look at that getting starting document or open up a new document. So while I do now have to get things set up again, it did force me to trash apps I no longer use or have interest in using again. OH well...any suggestions for a word processing app that actually works?

I'm sorry that you had to go through all of this with Pages and Safari. I have no problems with Pages whatsoever.

If gmail still crashes the iPad, I think that there is still something wrong on the iPad. If you restored to factory settings and then restored your backup, there could be a problem with the backup.

If you restored as new and did not use the backup, and you are still crashing on the gmail website, you might want to consider making an appointment at an Apple Store and ask the Apple Geniuses to evaluate the iPad.

QuickOffice Pro HD and Documents to Go Premium seem to get a lot of good reviews.

I restored as new and then used icloud to add back my address book, notes, and safari bookmarks. Going to manually add back the apps so I can organize them. I did a google search and found that other people are having gmail crash safari too but it doesn't happen on the iphone though on safari on the iphone it actually goes to a mobile gmail version and not the regular webversion so I wonder if there's some weird glitch. I'll have to figure out a time to go to the mall to have a genius take a look. Not sure what really can be done about it though since the ipad is I think already out of my extended applecare warranty. Gotta double check on that though.
