Printer Meltdown

Hi Guys,

I recently upgraded to a SSD and performed a fresh install of Mountain Lion. Since then my Canon MF4350d will NOT print. Every document sits in the print queue, paused. When I click resume nothing really happens. I've uninstalled the printer driver more times then I care to count. I've reset the printing System many times. I've gone into finder->volume-> Library->printers and trashed the Canon files as well as the PPD file that refers to my printer. I've gone into Launch agents and deleted the two canon files ...UFR2 and ...MFP. I've downloaded the latest driver from Canon's website, Installed it, and restarted my computer. All done more times than I care to admit, in the hopes that I missed something. Every avenue leads to the same point. I've called Canon and called Apple and they both blame each other and say there is nothing they can do. The printer itself works fine and it is communicating with my computer as it scans as before.

Here are my particulars if it helps.

I'm running 10.8.4 on a MBP 6,2. Printer is directly connected using USB to my MBP. When I upgraded from the stock hdd I used migration assistant.

Please, help. Its maddening reading this forum and seeing these steps work for seemingly everybody else.

Sincerly,

THE ROOKIE

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), MF4350d

Two things to check for me.

The first is to open System Information and select Printers in the left column. If you have more than one printer there will be two panes to the right. If this is the only printer then there will be just one pane to the right. In the case of two panes, select the MF in the top right pane to see information about the queue in the bottom right pane. If you have just this printer then the information about the MF will appear without any selection.

Can you copy the information that is shown here for the MF4350 and paste back here.

The other thing to check is a file called ccpd.conf. To see this file, open Finder and select Go > Go to Folder. Then enter the following

/Library/Caches/Canon/UFR2/CCPD/

and press Enter. This will take you to the CCPD folder where you should see the ccpd.conf file. Can you open this file with TextEdit, copy the contents and paste back here.

I have the same problem as OP. Here is the system information you requested.

The CCPD folder you asked for does not exist. There is a ccpd.conf file in /Library/Caches/Canon/CUPSCMFP/CCPD . It's contents are:

# Canon Printer Daemon for CUPS Configuration Data

<Path>

# CUPS configuration files Path

# Default /

CUPS_ConfigPath /

# LOG Directory Path

#LogDirectoryPath /var/log/CCPD/

The screen shots don't appear to be as legible as I initially thought they would be. So here's the same data again.

I'm sure it means more to you then it does to me. 🙂

Thanks for supplying that information.

Just now I checked the UFR2 v2.43 driver connected to an MF4340dn on a clean 10.8.4 VM.

The System Information appears the same as you have (and the other poster) but I don't have any ccpd.conf file as I thought I should. I do have the CCPD folder located in CUPSCMFP as mentioned above, but this folder is empty which I believe is correct because the MF4340 does not use the CMFP driver, which is for the MF80xx, MF71xx and Fax-L150/170.

Since you both appear to have this file, can you remove the printer from Print & Scan and then trash this ccpd.conf file. Then log out and back in, and then add the printer again. Then see if you can print and if you cannot, check if this ccpd.conf file has been created - in either folder.

Can you also open Activity Monitor and check that you have the UFR2 Backgrounder process in the list.

And one last check is to open Print & Scan, select the MF, click on Options & Supplies and then select the Utility tab. Then click on Open Printer Utility which will open the Canon UFRII Printer Utility. Here you will see a Printer Information button. Click this and a new window showing information about the MF should appear. Does this work?

I deleted the printer and the CCPD file. I then reinstalled the printer. No bueno. Interestingly the CCPD config file did not reappear. I then reset the printer system, restarted and reinstalled the driver. It's still not working but the CCPD config file returned.

The UFR 2 backgrounder is running.

Yes, the printer information button does work. Unidirectional communication method and Duplex unit is available.

Thanks for the quick reply PAHU.

Thanks for trying my suggestions and confirming the other items.

For the ccpd.conf file that has returned, is it located under the UFR2 folder or under the CUPSCMFP folder?

I've been trying to get the same symptom as you mention but I cannot. I can make the printer driver generate an error when printing but cannot get it to pause - except when I physically disconnect the printer.

I will spend some more time trying to break this and get back to you.

Sep 2, 2013 1:57 AM in response to PAHU

The ccpd.config file is in the CUPSCMFP folder.

Its a weired and seemingly uncommon problem. I've read many threads including one or two I think you solved where people with the exact same printer were able to get it printing after a simple print reset. I do not understand why this is so hard.

Would it make a difference if I downloaded the UK or JP version of the drivers? I can't imagine what could be different about them except paper sizes but I've long since been out of ideas.

There is a difference between the UK and US driver and its not just the paper. Each UFR2 device has a Function ID and it determines a number of operational parameters, not just paper sizes supported. If you use a driver meant for the US market on a machine sold outside of the USA region - Europe, Asia and Oceania, then you should use the UK English driver. If you are in Japan, then you would use their LIPSLX driver.

Compared to other users with UFR2 driver issues, your setup appears to be 100% correct so there is something else that must be contributing to your symptom that I have not experienced previously.

I remember reading that the UFR2 driver does not support a file system using OS X Journaled - Case Sensitive. I have no experience with an SSD Mac but I would assume you can still select this when you format/partition the SSD. If you open Disk Utility and select the 10.8 partition, what file format are you using?

I also know the driver has issues with FileVault. Are you using this?

And the last thing that I don't have or have access to is a Mac with a Fusion drive. Do you have this Mac configured in such a manner - ie do you have the SSD and a traditional HD in the Mac but it appears as one partition?

Sep 2, 2013 2:40 AM in response to PAHU

Bingo. I think you just blew this thing wide open. I have a 2 drive system with the operating system and all of my programs on the SSD and my large files on the HDD...both journaled and case sensitive!!!

For background I used filevault 2 on my stock hdd and the printer worked well.

I'm blown away! How could Canon and Apple not know this?!!! Seems like it should be part of the script.

Before I erase and reformat, you're certain that its incompatable with journaled + case sensitive?

Not 100% certain. I know it can be Journaled. The case-sensitive format was the issue from memory.

I thought it was stated in the Readme for the UFR2 driver, but I just checked it and could not find any mention of it. So I cannot remember where I read it but I will keep looking and get back to you - probably tomorrow at this stage.

Sep 2, 2013 4:55 AM in response to PAHU

Found it. There is no mention of what happens if you do use Case-sensitive but this is documented under Limitations for the UFR2 driver.

"The Volume format [Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)] or [Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive)] is not supported. Either one of [Mac OS Extended (Journaled)] and [Mac OS Extended] has to be used."
