iWeb and Mountain Lion

Well no, you won't find iWeb on your new machine because new macs have not shipped with iWeb or iDVD for a long time now and iWeb is not available in the Mac App Store and never has been. It has been unsupported by Apple for over a year now and really disappeared when MobileMe closed at the end of June last year. Apple no longer sells iWeb or supports it which why it is not on any new macs - you just get GarageBand, iMovie and iPhoto and thats it.

If you want iWeb you can re-install it onto your new Mac from your old installation CD's or if you have a previous copy of an iLife DVD that is either iLife 09 or 11 - iWeb 09 is on both of these.

If you can't find those installation CD's, then you are looking at purchasing the iLife boxed set, either iLife 09 or 11 from Amazon.

As for transferring site files, yes you can as long as you backed up the right files - you need to have backed up your User Library on your old mac and the iWeb storage files that you need is called domain.sites or domain.sites2. iWeb will not open any other files, as it has no import facility.

Your domain.sites files can be found under your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites. Copy this file over from backup and then double click it and iWeb will open and you have your site.

If you have this file, then you won't need to re-build, but if you don't, then you have no other option but to if you want to keep your site, as iWeb has no import facilities, so cannot import an already published site.

That answers a question I was going to ask. I have iLife '09, and I wondered if iDVD or iWeb would run in Mt Lion. Not that I need either - I have Adobe CS6 Master Collection, but I was curious if they were even compatible.

Yes. Both iWeb and iDVD both will run on Mt. Lion.

iDVD is too slow and cumbersome. I use Toast for burning and it's about 90% faster. I never really used iWeb, being schooled in Dreamweaver ten years ago. I do too much code "tweaking" to be comfortable with an app that doesn't allow it. I guess I'm not missing much.

I saw that you had answered some similar questions in other threads.

I have iweb and haven't been able to update my website for many years. which is now a problem. I'm now running 10.9.2

I retrieved my Domain.Sites2 folder from an old time machine backup and replaced it for the one in the User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites.

When I look at the file as a thumbnail, it's accurate with an image of my site and the proper dates creation and modification.

When I double click the file, iweb opens... but to a new project and not my website build.

I tried running the script you provided to someone else in a previous thread, but it was corrupted (probably too old). I'm not comfortable writing scripts in the terminal.

Anything I can do besides a complete rebuild of my site?

You don't write the script in Terminal. You use Script Editor. However, you can download a working copy it with this link: iWeb Domain File Backup.zip. Uncompress/unzip the file and launch it. It will ask you to pick the domain file you want to open.

Remember you should make your User/Library folder visible before trying the above.

NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

For Mavericks, 10.9, go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
