Why is my new iPod Nano not recognised by computer?

I have a brand new, never been used iPod Nano 7. Unfortunately my computer doesn't recognise the device. I have the latest version of iTunes and have tried using different USB ports and computers. Any suggestions?

iPod nano, iOS 6.1.3

I have also tried a different cable and giving it a brief charge before attempting to connect to the computer. There has been no problems connecting my iPad using the same cable or USB port and the issue remains the iPod.
