Can't login in iMessage

I can't use iMessage for the last days. Messages were not delivered so I logged out and since then, I can't login. My user and password are OK, I can use them in iTunes or App Store with no problems.

Anyone else has got this problem? I'm using DSL provider Vodafone in Spain. Thank you.

Hi,

You then need to find out what is "wrong" with your account.

If you are using an OS version before Yosemite then go here Reset Home Folder permissions and ACLs Error

Use the Orange Helpful marked post by Linc first.

Then use the Green Solved Post after that.

This will show you how many files should be Owned by but are not and then correct this.

Minor glitches with your Home account's folders such as Ownership and Read Write permissions are the first thing to sort out.

IF you are using a newer version of the OS those instructions no longer work.

Try Safe Mode Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

This opens the Mac using less OS items but you can still access your Account as well.

Rebooting if that works maybe enough.

Post back at this stage because this can go on and on trying a list of things that is almost endless.

Hi,

You would need to post in the iPad area to get the best advice on that Question.

It's not something we have been discussing here.

  • I went to Activity Monitor, found imagent and closed it. Tried again but didn't work.
  • I went to Library and deleted:Library/Preferences/com.apple.imagent.plist
    Library/Preferences/com.apple.iChat.plist
    Library/Preferences/com.apple.imessage.bag.plist
    Library/Preferences/com.apple.imservice.iMessage.plist
  • Status is OK: http://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/
  • I rebooted the Mac but still can't connect.
  • I rebooted the router.

Can't login. I used this app with no problems in the past but it just stopped working and can't find what has changed since then. Internet is working fine (browsing, Skype, downloading files, etc).

Thank you! 🙂

  • I checked my conection (reboot the router, opened iMessage ports just in case).
  • I checked my Apple ID, it is OK.
  • Time and date are OK.
  • Firewall etc never was a problem (it worked before with the same setup).
  • I modified my Hosts file at /private/etc/hosts. But I found a new problem, I can't sudo. I edit the file and replaced it authenticating, so I know now it's OK, but I can't use sudo command. I repaired permissions a few times but didn't fix it. Browsing this community I found how to fix permissions at / directory by loging in as single user mode and doing this:

/sbin/fsck -fy

/sbin/mount -wu /

/bin/chmod 1775 /

/bin/sync

exit

But after rebooting, the permissions problem is not fixed, I still cannot login in iMessage and I'm lost now.

I get this:

/bin/sh: /usr/bin/sudo: Permission denied

Also I get a warning but after some googling and searching around, I feel it exceedes my knowledge… Complete console output is:

dyld: DYLD_ environment variables being ignored because main executable (/usr/bin/login) is setuid or setgid

Last login: Fri Sep 6 10:38:48 on console

MacBook-Pro-de-Carola:~ Carola$ sudo

Back up all data, then reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

Sep 10, 2013 7:44 AM in response to Carola Clavo

This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are many possible causes for it. Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.

Before proceeding, test on another network, if possible. That could be a public Wi-Fi hotspot, if your computer is portable, or a cellular network if you have a mobile device that can share its Internet connection. If you find that iMessage works on the other network, the problem is in your network or at your ISP, not in your computer.

Step 1

Check the status of the service. If the service is down, wait tor it to come back up. There may be a localized outage, even if the status indicator is green.

Step 2

Sign out of iMessage on all your Apple devices. Log out and log back in. Try again to sign in.

Step 3

Restart your broadband device and your router, if different. You may have to skip this step if you don't control those devices.

Step 4

From the menu bar, select

 ▹ About This Mac

Below the "OS X" legend in the window that opens, the OS version appears. Click the version line twice to display the serial number. If the number is missing or invalid according to this web form, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the problem corrected.

Step 5

Take the steps suggested in this support article. If you don't understand some of the steps or can't carry them out, ask for guidance.

Step 6

From the menu bar, select

System Preferences Network

If the preference pane is locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock it. Then click the Advanced button and select the Proxies tab. If the box marked SOCKS Proxy is checked, uncheck it. You don’t need to change any other settings in the window. Click OK and then Apply. Test.

The result may be that you can't connect to the Internet at all. Revert the change if that happens, or if iMessage still doesn't work. Remember that you must Apply any changes you make in the preference pane before they take effect.

Step 7

Select from the menu bar

 ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player Storage

and click

Block all sites from storing information on this computer

Close the preference pane.

Step 8

Make sure you know the ID and password you use with iMessage. Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.

Use the search box in the toolbar of the Keychain Access window to find and delete all items with "iMessage" in the name. Log out and log back in.

Step 9

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

If iMessage worked in the guest account, stop here and post your results.

Step 10

Boot in safe mode and log in. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and test again.

If iMessage worked in safe mode, but didn't work when you booted out of safe mode, stop here and post your results.

Step 11

Reset theNVRAM.

Step 12

Reinstall OS X.

Step 13

If none of the above steps resolves the issue, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or contact Apple Support.

Thank you very much for this long, useful reply.

Sadly, any of this didn't work.

The only step I couldn't accomplish or try is the one referred to Serial Number. I have no serial number in my About window, because a year ago this computer had its motherboard replaced and the number is missing since then; however, I have been using iMessage all this year with no problems, until I logged out last week.

I reinstalled the system twice this afternoon and tried all of the above suggestions (Whew! ALL of them!) but still I can't login. 😠

Additionally we tried at home another iTunes account (from my boyfriend) and also three different WiFi networks, created a couple new users, when in Safe mode I also tried Guest user too… deleted Network prefs, resetted VRAM, everything.

I don't have Apple Store at my town, so there is no Genius for me, and no Apple Care for this computer, so I guess iMessages is just finished for me. I used it a lot until it stopped working, the laptop keyboard is much more comfortable but I guess I'll use the iPhone keyboard again.

Thank you very much for helping me 🙂

Sep 10, 2013 11:52 AM in response to Carola Clavo

Hi,

The missing Serial Number is an issue after the OS X 10.8.2 update.

I was unaware of the possibility to stay logged in if the app was not closed down and stayed linked to the servers.

The only way around this is to have the Serial Number "Flashed" to the "new" motherboard.

This can be done at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorised Service Provider.

Hopefully one of these options was the way the Mother board was replaced so that you can get them to finish the job.

You will probably find FaceTime also does not work.
