Visual voicemail not working - iphone 5

I've seen this problem posted about a lot but not so much recently. I got a brand new iphone 5 today and it won't connect to Visual Voicemail. I was on the phone for hours with AT&T, and Apple finally told me to return the phone. I upgraded from a 4, and everything was working fine on that. I can dial into voicemail, but messages aren't showing up on my phone. No password prompt, nothing.

Has anyone resolved this recently. I am incredibly frustrated, and afraid that if I bring home another phone it will have the same problem.

iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.4

Someone else said this too, but, in case it helps anyone else, here's the way I fixed this.

Enter voicemail, first time, it dials in and challenges for a password

Exit

Settings -> Phone and, magically, without changing a thing, I get challenged by the iPhone for the voicemail PIN, entered it, it works again

In my case, I have a 5S and restored to that an image of my retired 5. Everything but the voicemail worked without a change.

I hope this is not such an old issue it won't be responded to!

I am very disheartened(that is putting it lightly) that I need to use data to show when I have a voice mail!😠😠 I was a long time Verizon customer and disliked the service they were providing me, and for a very long time I must say was I dissatisfied. I moved over to AT+T and have not had any issue with their service besides this one. My plan allows unlimited texting and calls, why in the H..L would I need to use data to see that I had a voice mail!!!!!!!!!!! I have a 1GB data plan and don't intend on going up to a 3! I don't use the net except in emergencies.

Would anyone know if AT+T has a setting to allow visual notifications without data usage, or even without being connected to a WiFi?

The only way for you to change your voicemail plan would be through AT&T. If you do not want to use Visual Voicemail, you will need to have AT&T remove it from your account and then change your account to the regular voicemail service. Unless you receive a great deal of voicemail, it does not use that much data. That data is required to be able to download the voicemail to your phone so you can listen to it. If you would rather get voicemail the old fashioned way by dialing the number, you can do that.

Thanks ChrisJ4203.

I don't get a lot of voice mails nor do I surf the net much but I really don't want to go over my and my wife's self-imposed 1GB monthly data plan. The risk of leaving on my cellular data and going over the budget just to show that I have a new voicemail seems ridiculous to me since my Samsung S3 through Verizon did this without being on a WiFi or using data! Or is this problem specific only to the Iphone, regardless of who the carrier is?

I know that cellular data has to be on for the VVM on the iPhone. I don't get a great deal of voicemail myself, but I use the phone for a great deal of other things. I generally only use around 1GB of data a month myself, since I'm on Wi-Fi most of the time. I've got a family plan with AT&T, and we have 10GB of shared data for the 6 devices I have on the plan. Most months we do not use more than 7-8GB of data. I cannot answer how the Samsung handles voicemail, since I'm not familiar with the device. I've only used an iPhone since their initial release. I just know that is uses cellular data. Depending on what else you use data for, I really don't see that causing you to go over your allotment, but then, I'm not going to tell you how to configure your iPhone. Worse case scenario, try one month to see what happens, and if it causes you issues, then revert back to standard voicemail as I indicated earlier.
