My ATT IMAP Mail account will not receive mail unless I rebuild the mailbox.

Hi - I have one ATT IMAP Mail account that does not receive mail promptly, often taking hours or even days to arrive unless I rebuild that particular mailbox. Another IMAP account with a different provider works fine. I have tried to figure out the problem with ATT, but they seem to think the problem is Apple Mail. I know the mail should be arriving because I can see it in in webmail, but it doesn't arrive until immediately after I rebuild. What's up with this and how do I fix it?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7

I am trying to use my cox.net email account. It is IMAP but I was told do not use sl with 587 port but I rec mail with 4655 servor using ssl on my Mac Mini but I can't send any email in my iphone what ar ethe correct settings.

I need a walk through please says servre SMTP or Imap.cox.net does not respond for outgoing server
