Computer Does Not Recognize Ipod

I have seen several postings regarding this topic, but mine is somewhat unique and I was hoping someone could help. I have a 5th gen 30 gb video Ipod that was working smoothly until recently. When I plug in my Ipod, the computer recognizes it as a plug in device on the system tray ,and lists it as my E: drive. However, when I plug it in to the computer, this Autoplay window pops up and the flashlight goes searching for some file and I have no idea what it is looking for. It apparently never finds the file it is looking for, because Itunes never recognizes the Ipod. I tried to restore the Ipod, but when I click on the updater, it freezes the updater function as when I scroll the cursor over the Updater window the hourglass always shows up and it never indicates that it has recognized the Ipod. Any ideas? Thanks.

I KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!!!!!!!1 READ THE STUFF FROM POLITE FIRST DOWN BELOW IN THE TOPIC SOMEWHERE. HOWEVER, DOING A FORMAT E; ACTUALLY SHOULD BE E: OR WHATEVER DRIVE I THINK, BUT THIS did NOT work for me, so I just did FORMAT D: IN THE CMD WINDOW, this took about 3 mins to recognise the drive (verifying) and then formatted in about 10 seconds, I then rebooted, ran updater, did a restore and it worked, thanks POLITE, after playing on this for ages to try and get it working, it now is ! Cheers and hope everyone else cn get theirs working.

I'm having pretty much the same problem too. My ipod would freeze up on me and I wouldn't even be able to turn it off so I would just have to let the battery run out and then I would plug it up to the computer and it would charge and be fine for awhile. But now it froze up but when I went to plug it up to the computer itunes didnt recognize it so I can't add songs or do anything with it and now its like permanently frozen, I can't do anything with it. I hadn't been doing the updates so I thought maybe thats what was wrong so I downloaded the latest itunes update and then the latest ipod updater. But then when i went to run the ipod updater it said 'ipod service error' Please help!!!

Likewise, I have had issues with my 60Gb Video, it would play but wouldn't interface with 3 computers I had, thought it was because I introduced it to a new laptop I have recently got until i read this forum. After three or so days have followed Polite's lead and managed to reformat it using CMD (right click on my computer, select manage, select the disk that resembles yours, then Format, I without realising must have selected NTFS or there wasn't an option otherwise, then once the disk had intialised, it took over 20mins, had doubts whether i could have selected the Quick Format option but didn't. The I safely removed the ipod, rebooted the computer and then opened Itunes and then the latest Updater , plugged back my ipod and then updater finally saw my ipod!!!! Lordy!!! Just for luck i selected restore, and I guess it changed it back to Fat32 as when i now look back in CMD it has it down as Fat32 from NTFS!! Now just restoring all my music!!

hope this helps!!
