2008 MacBook Pro display pink and white on start up

My daughters spring 2008 MacBook Prohad start up problems today. The start up basically stopped and the display went to pink and white with a green apple logo. THe display was pixelated and start up stopped.

Not sure what this means or what can be done to fix it, any help is appreciated.

As an update to this Apple did repair the MBP through the flat rate repair plan $310 plus tax. They replaced the logic board and I had the computer back in 2 days.

The display had some dead pixels and was not replaced, I took it back to the Apple store and pointed this out to a Tech. The result was it was sent back to the repair depot and the display has also been replaced.

This was a great deal and I would reccomend this option if it is available, as it was half the cost of the instore Apple estimate for the logic board alone.
