Buying a new iMac

Hi All

I am considering buying a new iMac, my old iMac is now 6 years old and getting a bit slow and clunky. It had 2GB RAM as standard and last year I upgraded to 4GB RAM, the Max it will take. This helped initially but the machine is now getting very slow and clunky again.

I am considering a new 21.5-inch: 2.7GHz model with 8 GB of Ram as standard (2 x 4GB RAM) but I am considering ordering it with the optional 16GB RAM but can anyone tell me if the RAM in these new models can be upgraded in the future to more than 16GB and what the Max RAM would be on this new current model?

I also see that there is a forthcoming upgrade to the OS system - 'Maverick' - so, would it be worth waiting to buy a machine with Maverick already installed, or would the upgrade be easy later on if I bought a new model now?

Many thanks.

Dave

Hi All

Just an update on my original post; having carried out the various tasks etc. suggested by Lex and others, my iMac seems to be performing much better and faster these last few days. Most operations have really speeded up whilst other more minor problems still need work. Having mulled over the various options open to me I have decided to wait to see how things progress with my iMac and keep an eye on the introduction of possible new improved models, including those with OS Maverick when it is released.

Many thanks for all the suggestions and help.

Hi!

Would you be willing to look over my EtreCheck assessment and give some suggestions? If so, keep in mind I need some detailed instructions on how/what to change in my computer. I still get a little nervous deleting/uninstalling things. If not, do you have suggestions on who I could contact?

Here's my assessment below in case you're game! Thanks in advance for any info! 🙂

1. Your wife has been buying the fake Hermes things? They have left a tracker:

in Library/LaunchDaemons delete com.rogueamoeba.hermes.plist . Then empty the Trash bin.

2. Completely Uninstall Trusteer / Report !

3. Uninstall Adobe Switchboard.

4. Uninstall RealPlayer, Shockwave, Silverlight, Growl, 3iVX, Soundflower. Quicksilver.

You can use VLC later when evrything is clean.

5. Do you use Logmein as Host or Client ???

6. Uninstall BrowserPlus, Shapeshifter, ApplicationEnhancer, FB, everything Lacie, comapcpcpestart.

Restart, run a new Etrecheck list.

There is more to do.

FYI, com.rogueamoeba.hermes.plist has nothing to do with Hermes fashion products, fake or otherwise. It is part of Rogue Amoeba's Audio Hijack Pro. It may not be fully functional with Mavericks, but it should not slow down the mac either.

Silverlight, as long as it is up to date, should not be a problem either, & may be necessary for certain apps like Hulu desktop to run.

Nov 7, 2013 6:11 AM in response to Lexiepex

Yes, the rogue media is about the Audio Hijack. And I know that Silverlight is used with our netflix instant account.

Trusteer is something that checks bank sites that we use to make sure they are real. Should I still get rid of that?

Soundflower is connected to Rogue which I use quite a bit. Should I keep that? Logmein I rarely use and could do without (free account). Should I uninstall that? Uninstall FB? Is that Facebook? And will it affect our accounts? And Lacie is my back up external drive. Should I keep that?

Sorry for all the questions. I just want to make sure I don't cause any other problems with things we use all the time. And thanks for your help!

Tom,

- Yes Trusteer / Report has to go, completely, see all the reports in this forum and other forums.

- Soundflower is considered causing issues, but I have no longtime experience: only tested in MountainLion (just after MLion was available) and it did not do well in my system.

- Sound software: in general I expect problems from software that digs in the system too deep, that is why I installed the VLC application and threw out all the others, including divx. Never had a problem since.

- How about the Logmein question?

- For Facebook you do not need FB, and if so, you can reinstall.

- A backup drive well formatted and used with a mac absolutely does not need any drivers and other (Lacie) software (WD, Lacie, Seagate and others have all sorts of softwares, but with Macs you should not install those, see other threads and forums), also my own experience and testing (but when you have a Lacie Raid, you need the raid software).

We have still to do more cleaning.

Lex,

Thanks. I will go through the steps you gave and run a new report.

On the Logmein question, I'm not sure what it means to be a host or client. I downloaded a free version of it years ago and used it a few times to access my computer remotely, but I have rarely used it, and wouldn't miss it if you said I should remove it. I hope that helps... Thanks again.

Tom, Logmein is not harmfull, but when you do not need it, it is better to uninstall it, it uses resources. I use Logmein "host" in two remote technical computers running XP, and I have the LMI client in my macs (is just a plugin for the browser), to run only when I need to access the remotes. I propose to uninstall and when ever needed, you download the latest version and install again.
