Buying a new iMac

Hi All

I am considering buying a new iMac, my old iMac is now 6 years old and getting a bit slow and clunky. It had 2GB RAM as standard and last year I upgraded to 4GB RAM, the Max it will take. This helped initially but the machine is now getting very slow and clunky again.

I am considering a new 21.5-inch: 2.7GHz model with 8 GB of Ram as standard (2 x 4GB RAM) but I am considering ordering it with the optional 16GB RAM but can anyone tell me if the RAM in these new models can be upgraded in the future to more than 16GB and what the Max RAM would be on this new current model?

I also see that there is a forthcoming upgrade to the OS system - 'Maverick' - so, would it be worth waiting to buy a machine with Maverick already installed, or would the upgrade be easy later on if I bought a new model now?

Many thanks.

Dave

So, I've been trying to figure out how to uninstall the programs you listed and I need more advice. I did see that 3iVX had an uninstall option, so I did that, but a lot of the others didn't. Should I use a program like AppCleaner?

I'm not exactly sure of the best way to get rid of all the things you put on the list. Thanks again!

Note that Silverlight does not 'dig' into the system; it is just an Internet plug-in. Besides, as Tom mentioned it is necessary for anyone using the Netflix streaming video service to watch movies on their Mac. VLC is no substitute for that.

Lex,

I tried to uninstall as much as I could. Some applications wouldn't let me get rid of it (shapeshifter), some I thought I had removed, but it seems to still be there (trusteer) and some things like comapcpcpestart I wasn't sure if that was needed as it's connected to my apc backup shutdown battery. But here's a new Etrecheck that I ran:

Let me know what you think. Thanks again,

Tom

Your questions:

- Leave comapc in, for the APC, I agree.

1. When you uninstalled Lacie software: now just remove the leftover com.lacie.eventsactions.launcher.agent.plist from the /LaunchAgents/ folder: there is one in user /Library/ and HDD /Library/. If you do not find the entry there, look in /System/Library/LaunchAgents (be careful there!!).

Then remove the leftover

com.lacie.desktopmanager.service.plist from the HDD /Library/LaunchDaemons/ folder.

2. Trusteer: delete com.trusteer.rapport.rapportd.plist from the LaunchAgents folder(s) and

com.trusteer.rooks.rooksd.plist LaunchDaemons folders.

secure empty the Trash.

Restart. Download FindAnyFile from http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/ , install, type trusteer in the search field, in the list move to trash all entries that contain trusteer. Then close FAF and secure empty the Trash.

Restart again. A new E list here.

Then secure and restart solve the problem.

A secure erase doesn't have anything to do with that. Files can't be erased when they are in use or the OS thinks they are. A restart usually is all it takes to solve that because once in the trash, the file won't be accessed after the next start up.

Better. You use a lot of "sound" applications and codecs, which are eating a piece of Ram, but OK, if that is what you use the mac for, use it. Luckily Mavericks is very efficient with Ram.

I don't expect problems, but I think you could put some extra Ram in, since it is so cheap these days. Your mac can handle 6GB of Ram, and it has 2 slots, so you can put in one 4GB module instead one slot, that makes the total 5, or you can put two 2 GB in both slots that makes 4, or 2 in one slot and 4 in the second slot.

Important is that you use a good brand, Crucial or OWC, and have the EXACT specs, because macs are very "picky" about that.

Use the configurator on their sites.

Lex,

Thanks so much for all your help!

I do have one last question, that you can answer or not, but, do persons like yourself on the discussion site get paid for your help or do you just get the satisfaction of helping people? Either way, I'm extremely grateful for people like yourself who are so knowledgeable about computers!

Thanks again,

Tom

No Tom, nobody is paid here as far as I know. Some are from "the IT business" , most are not (I am not). This is just users to users. Helping out, learning, sharing. Most are not interested in the "points" (I am not), and helping also where the questions are not from the OP (original poster of the thread, only the OP can give points).

Happy to be of help, I hope it made something better for you. 🙂

Once we reach the highly revered (not!) level 6 status, we are richly rewarded: we get a black tee shirt with an Apple logo on the front.

Considering the price of the shirt & how long it took me to get to level 6, I figure for me that worked out to a pay rate of about ½¢ an hour. 😁

Wow, a lot of great help in this thread! I apologize if I'm in the wrong place, but it would be handy if I could get help here. I just updated from 4 GB of RAM to 12 GB. I'm not seeing the performance improvements I was hoping for, so now I'm looking through the discussions to figure out things that can help. Below are my results from EtreCheck. I've had problems uninstalling WD SmartWare, and ended up using the MacKeeper Smart Uninstaller. Unfortunately, it left the Launch Daemons behind.

Any recommendations?
