how much does 5GB icloud hold?

I keep getting alerts that my iCloud is almost at capacity. 5GB sounds like so much storage. I can't believe that a normal person such as myself would even get close to using it all. I have no documents, only 800 pictures and perhaps the same amount of music in the cloud. I have turned off all apps. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You might check Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage to see what's using all the storage. If the items listed there don't account for it, connect your phone to your computer and check the capacity bar in iTunes to see how large the "Other" (yellow) segment is. If it's unusually large (multiple GBs), you probably need to restore your phone to reduce it.
