fequent mid 2012 macbook pro retina kernel panic reboots possibly GPU related

I've been having a lot of what seem to be kernel panics, usually while watching/forwarding flash videos (e.g. on youtube) and or toggling between full screen or not or using Adobe Bridge and toggling between full screen or not.

What happens is that the screen goes blank (if I hit the keyboard I hear dinging sounds) and the screen goes blank, and I have to force a power off/on.

This has happened as often as 10 times a day.

I took my computer into the apple store, they ran their extended diagnostics and found nothing. The tech said it could be a logic board error, but because all the logs in the console were kernel panics he suspected it was the OS.

I reformatted the drive, reinstalled the OS and it ran fine for a day or so with minimal new software, including on youtube etc.

But today, I installed more software (Photoshop CC, a java based game, some extentions to firefox, and I experienced two panics today while viewing flash video.).

Anyone have any ideas?

I'd hate to shell out for a logic board replacement since I'm out of warrenty (just).

Thanks!!!

Mid 2012 MBP retina with very similar problems - gpu panics grew from once every few days starting in October to daily to every few minutes this past weekend with HDMI out problems appearing near the end. MBP is running Mavericks - we deleted some suspect software, reset the SMC and NVRAM with no improvement. We worked with an authorized apple service center on the fix. The unit had passed the suite of hardware tests the previous week but indications were of a bad gpu/logic board. I got authorization from my credit card company which granted me an additional one year warrantee.

The replacement board with installation was $600 - it would have been 1300 if the board had been damaged by spill or physical damage. Since the replacement early yesterday, the system has not panicked even when under heavy usage. This is the longest it has gone without a panic in the last two months. Hopefully this was the answer.

I asked the service tech - he said he sees very few Macbook Pro Retinas in for service and when he does it usually relates to something like spilled coffee or a dropped computer. In his opinion, the MBP retina is quite reliable.

I would definitely get Applecare on this computer if it were still under warrantee. Good luck to others with similar problems

I had the same problems with my mid-2010 MBP and after a week of troubleshooting, I finally caved in and brought it in to the Apple Store. It was out of warranty, and even my previous Apple Store repair (from Jan 2013) to replace the logic board and display was out of warranty as well.

The tech was great and even thanked me for the detailed notes I left when I made my online Genius Bar appointment. A quick diagnosis confirmed it was a hardware problem. He said it was a known issue, then excused himself to speak to a manager to get a few things authorized. When he came back, he said that not only will they replace the faulty hardware for free, but they are authorizing a refund of the $310 I paid for my repair a year ago.

Thought I'd relate my experience in case it can help someone else. If Apple can confirm that you have a hardware problem and the tech says you have to pay for the repair, you might want to mention that other users have had their repairs done for free---even out of warranty---because it's a known Apple hardware problem.

Hi everyone, since a couple days ago I started to have this problem too. MBP with Retina 15" mid-2012

Now I'm trying to figure out when this problem appears and I have found the way to cause it: open hd video in VLC on Desktop 1 and on Desktop 2 I'm trying to playback 1080p video from youtube. It takes about 1 minute for screen to become black.

And here's log that I have now:

One interesting thing: today I continued testing this issue, I connected my MBP to TV with HDMI cable, run HD video in VLC and left it. Surprisingly, everything was good: video was played without any crashes. BTW, It was using NVIDIA card to play it. So, this issue is very strange...

Actually, I don't know why Apple didn't left any comment about it, cause a lot of people have this problem with mid-2012 MBP Retina.

Jan 29, 2014 1:02 PM in response to Tema Krukovets

MBP Retina 15" Mid 2012 - since replacing the logic board in late December the problem has not returned. The crashes prior to repair had grown in frequency from once a week to once a day, to every few minutes near the end. I speculate this issue was poor heat dissipation from the GPU that progressively got worse but have no evidence of this. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the authorized Mac Service center I went too said they had not seen this problem before althought they had seen MBPretinas for physical damage. Their impression was this model is reliable. My sense from this forum is that a small number are affected by this problem. Higher load seemed to increase the frequency of the problem. We tried resetting the SMC and NVRAM thinking that the thermal management might have been out of whack.

Tema, if the crashes have become frequent, I'd get something done about it. If you are under Applecare, use that. If you purchased using a credit card, check and see if you have an extended warranty through the card - for me this doubled the one year warranty and covered my repair. The authorized Mac service center ordered the parts and did the repair one day - it was ready a few hours after dropping it off. I'm not sure whether this is what happens at Genius bars.

At the start, the crashes were rare enough that they did not occur when running hardware tests. Near the end, it was hard to avoid a crash.

I have the same thing starting about 2 weeks ago. Same Panic. I'm now up to two or three times a day.

Many of the cases are when the system is coming out of sleep or a monitor is added or removed. I don't think I've ever seen it in steady state operation.

In my 20+ years of software development experience, I have to say this smells like software, like a bad critical section revolving around Maverics. I would like to hear if everyone seeing this is on Maverics - I certainly am.

Will report if GPU replace happens, if it works. To me, this is about the same build quality I got out of my Lenovo laptops, so Apple's on par with other manufacturers --- nothing out of the ordinary.

Feb 4, 2014 11:19 AM in response to bbulkow

The MBPretina that we had affected runs Mavericks. We also tried a number of software related adjustments - removing kexts that weren't provided by Apple, etc. We also tried resetting SMC and NVRAM in case the thermal management was messed up. In our case, the logic board turned out to be the problem as switching the board without any changes to system software has eliminated the problem over the last 5 weeks. Near the end, panics were occuring every 5-15 minutes and the hdmi output was failing frequently even without a panic.

I looked at some of the teardown photos of the MBPretina - it is a very compact package. The GPU is heat sunk against a narrow air channel. I suspect there is variability either with the quality of the thermal bonding on the GPU or with the air flow through the channel - if you are close to the edge, the system can panic. The progressive nature of failures would be due to either degradation of the thermal bond or accumulated damage to the GPU. That's my guess at least and why it doesn't affect everyone.

Let us know what happens.

Very interesting Peter. Where is the GPU in relation to the Thunderbolt ports and power supply? I notice my 15" MBP Retina (with 650M GPU) gets a lot hotter near where the power supply comes in than my colleague's one, which is a year younger and has the 750M GPU)

My logic board has already been replaced and I'm still having these GPU panics (plus Chrome crashing 2-3 times a day, and every time it does, GfxCardStatus tells me it's switched GPU. I went to the Apple Store at the weekend and they said I should try reinstalling the OS, and if that doesn't fix it they will look again at the hardware. Personally I think it's got something to do with the 650M which was fixed in the 750M, but I don't know what.

http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Retina+Display+Mid+2012+Teard own/9462

If you look at step 14 you can see the GPU - from the backside its a little to the right of center perhaps an inch away from the hinge. If you look at the late 2013 teardown with the iris graphics http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Retina+Display+Late+2013+Tear down/18696, the heatsink attachment is different - looks like a larger single pad.

Looks just like mine. Last weekend I reinstalled the OS completely (i.e. completely wiped the drive) and took the Apple Store advice and restored my personal and app data from Time Machine, but not system settings. The morning after the reinstall I had four spontanteous reboots in a row (3 GPU Panics and a Thunderbolt insertion). Then I reset the SMC and had 2 days without a crash.... but then they started again, including one right in the middle of showing a demo Vimeo video to some business contacts. They're pretty much every day.

I've got another Apple Store appointment on Tuesday - obviously their advice to reinstall the OS hasn't helped - I'll let you know how it goes.

I had similar hangs that showed up as GPU panics in the logs. For the first year machine was pretty solid; after that, crashes started to occur. Up to roughly two months ago these were roughly monthly, then these hangs creeped to weekly, until a week ago, they started to occur every couple days. In the end of the week, system crashed on almost every wake-up from suspend, and a day after that, didn't do anything indicating wake-up on any long power button presses (but revived after couple hours).

At this point my laptop (which was ordered from Apple Store when mid-2012 Retina MacBook Pro became orderable) was out of one-year warranty. I took it to local Premium Service Provider. As it had no physical damage, they stated it would likely be covered by warranty (which slightly puzzled me), and I left it for repair.

Roughly 44 hours later I have it back, motherboard replaced. Apparently repair shop had requested warranty extension for it after diagnostics, and got it. Repair and parts were free and service was swift; I'm quite happy with this outcome.

I am not certain if EU wide consumer protection has anything to do with their interest to co-operate; Finland certainly has quite an aggressive consumer protection ombudsman's office. Basically they expect laptops to always last two years of normal use.

I'm also having the exact same problem with my mid 2012 15" MBPr. My computer crashes with a "GPU panic" report when using the discreet graphics & under heavy load. Whenever I run final cut, it dies on me, and I can only seem to remedy the problem by locking it on integrated graphics via "gfx status" but then I lose my ability to use a second screen & it slows my work down quite a bit. I'm going to contct apple to see if I can get some kind of a warranty extension & repair because It's pretty sad that I've only had the machine for just over a year and havent abused it in any way. I would expect to get a little more life out of it than this.

fequent mid 2012 macbook pro retina kernel panic reboots possibly GPU related
