fequent mid 2012 macbook pro retina kernel panic reboots possibly GPU related

Hi!

I'm having the same problems as all these people.

My screen turns black whenever my macbook pro retina switches to the NVIDIA 650M. On the HD4000 it (mostly) runs fine. This is very frustrating because I use my macbook for work and it looks very unprofessional when I need to reboot 3 times within an hour.

I confirmed this happens mostly when it uses the NVIDIA 650M by doing a couple of tests. For instance I used Geekbench 4. With this program I was able to benchmark both the HD4000 and NVIDIA 650M separately. Starting the 650M benchmark the screen turns black immediately EVERYTIME. With the HD4000 it does not.

So, my question is: is Apple going to acknowledge this problem or what? I would expect of them that they would, as they did with the 2011 model graphics problems. Please Apple, respond to this thread and help us out!

The exact reason for failure in that panic report is unlike any I have seen posted here.

The uniqueness of your panic report suggests you have a unique FAILURE, in your computer only, not a design issue.

If you have a way to replicate the failure on demand, make an appointment at the genius bar of an Apple-owned store fro a free evaluation. Anything you can replicate on demand, they can fix.

I possibly groped after something that might be a possible clue to the cause of kernel panic on my mid-2012 non-Retina laptop. I don't know whether the fact of all the mid-2012 Retina and non-Retina MBPs sharing the same graphics hardware (Intel HD 4000+nVidia GT 650M) with the difference that the former have the screen as 4x pixels large as the latter contributes to such high KP rate as opposed to later gen Retina MBPs but I hope (knock the wood) I was able to work around the issue occurring every time I ran Pages '09 (v 4.2). When I used to work intensively in Pages opened for quite a long time with rather demanding workflow load I'd face either black screen or KP straightaway. What I did acting just off my intuition was to uncheck automatic switching in Energy Savings prefs. After that I no more experienced KP even working very many hours in Pages. I even noticed that Time Machine-like animation of Versions browsing improved slightly in spite of RAM running out.

If that's the case then I'm sincerely astonished since it's supposed that the system would take care of every application's demands for graphics resources allocation by itself and would switch to the dedicated GPU. Strange it fails.

This panic most likely indicates a defective GPU.

~$900 dollars in the US, including servicing, for your model outside of warranty. :/ , sorry.

I have 2012 MackBook Retina as well, and I JUST run out of warrenty as well! What the ****?!?? My computer began panicing! I read through the report and figured that it is a video card problem. While you are not doing anything hardcore, like video, games, or photoshop, you are on build-in videocard, but once you start photoshop and once it switches to more powerful card, it PANICS! That is why it isTHE LAST reported thing in the Report.... always.

I guess it is some kind bad GPU because Apple also, apdated it in 2013!

i can confirm i had exactly the same problem since a few days back - for now, i'm using gfxCardStatus to use Integrated GPU (Intel HD Graphics 4000) only which gives me much longer up time (but still crashes occasionally) - this solution is no where to be perfect - which i just found today i lost the ability to use secondary monitor throught thunderbolt card - which is extremely embrassing in boardroom.

I booked Genius appointment this Friday but unfortunately my warranty just ran off 20 days ago 😟 so even it's a hardware problem, i think Apple will be doging their reponsibility.

I'll be extremely not happy about it if it proves to be a hardware defect - on the forum there're so many people complaining about the same thing and it happends to the MacBook Pro Mid 2010 before which Apple eventually provided 3 years warranty/replacement for the defect:

I've been having the problem on my MBP Retina 15 inch (10,1 mid-2012 model). First (earlier this year) there were GPU Panics and reboots of the whole machine so Apple replaced the logic board. Now the whole machine freezes a couple of times a week, usually when one of the following happens:

- Unplug/plug in external monitor (thunderbolt)

- Unplug/plug in external ethernet dongle (thunderbolt)

- Open a Facebook photo in Chrome within a few minutes after opening the lid after sleep (in which case you often get shown a photo you were looking at a few hours ago or even yesterday instead of the one you clicked on)

- Spontaneously (i.e. not related to any action) within a few minutes after opening the laptop lid

Someone told me there was a Hacker News thread saying the first generation of 15" MBP Retina models (the mid 2012s) have a dodgy GPU, but I can't find it anywhere.

My MBP is going back to the shop. It's about to run out of guarantee so I'll have to buy Applecare to extend it. Ouch.

BTW whenever this happens you get pretty much the following in the log:

The GPU Restart doesn't always happen in which case you have to reboot forcibly to unlock the machine.

visited Covent Garden Apple Store and got Logic Board replaced - so far so good and although I'm 2 months beyond the 1 Year AppleCare/Warranty but we are still covered by EU 2 Year Consumer Warranty for products with defect.

So far so good. I don't need to use gfxCardStatus to stick to Integrated GPU to avoid the crash.

It took exactly a week to get it fixed by Apple Store (was told 7-10 days). Note that once you are at Genius Bar, the staff will remote log into its diagostic tool from your MBP; but that tool didn't pick up the hardware issue. The staff still took my laptop.

++ for Apple (although I still suspect this is a systematic problem rather than ramdom faulty products).

Suggest you guys just visit Apple Store and see if they can fix it for you... good luck.

Mine's having the same problem. I took it to Apple as it was having distorted video problems out of the blue. I was able to get some pictures of it and the store went ahead and sent it in to the depot to do all their testing and replace any bad components. It came back to me with a logic board replacement covered under AppleCare. I have had the machine back for 36 hours and it has Kernel Panicked 6 times. I checked the console logs, 5 listed the GPU as the problem and 1 listed the CPU. It works, sort of, with the Intel HD 4000 graphics, but it would freeze from time to time requiring a hard reboot. If I switch off "Automatic Graphic Switching" under System Prefs>Energy Saver, that when all the fun comes out to play. Kernel Panics, semi-inverted graphics (whites become light greens, shadows becoming purple, etc.), freezing among other problems. I noticed the USB bus is a LOT slower then normal. Before the logic board replacement, Time Machine would backup my entire system (40GB) in less then 20 minutes (2GB every minute) because I use a USB 3 drive. It now does 200MB (yes, two-hundred MEGAbytes) in 3 minutes, slower then USB 1.1.

To top it all off, the computer WON'T BOOT! Its getting stuck at the Apple logo with the spining pin wheel. Even if I try booting from a USB Thumb Drive with OS X Mavericks Recovery on it, it will not boot. I have tried booting it up half a dozen times today or so, and it only booted to the desktop once. I tried SMC and PRAM resets, booting with Safe Boot and even booted with Verbose mode to see where it was hanging up. With Verbose mode, I found that the boot actually finishes, but the GPU having so many problems, can't display the desktop or login screen after reboot. How sad is that?

I wish Apple reads this. I've very disappointed with the quality control, or lack of.

I just started having a very similar problem. Mine was still under warraty. It has had the logic board replaced twice for overheating. Now after the second "repair" I have been getting this all day since within 5 minutes of turning it on the first time. There are serious problems with many MacBook Pro Retinas. I have found others complaining here too and sometimes Apple even deletes the threads. You should not have to pay for this.
