Search not extending to Share Point

OK so I have 5 macs one of which I use as a filer server. All running latest version of Mountain Lion.

The File Server mac I have set up some share points and applied permissions. I have owner permissions and all other users have been set read only permissions.

On the client macs I have ensured that the Share Points are not added to the Privacy tab of Spotlight. I have even added them and them removed them to force re-indexing.

So, when I go into a Share Point from a client and carry out a search, I get no results at all with the exception of when I carry out a search (as the owner user). I am thinking that the failure of the search to provide results is based on the permissions set for the user. Surely not !

Can anyone help me out with light of throw any light on it.

Thanks.

Ooh yes. Many more files. I am confused by it. When I carry out a search the results are patchy. Sometimes no results are shown and if I toggle between where to search the results come up. That is when logged in as myself. But on other users accounts even when toggling nothing is returned. I am starting to think I should have stuck with windows. I can't believe that search is like this 😟

Hi Linc,

I find it all very tough on my limited mind! :-/ I remember you asking if permissions were set right through to the top folder and I said yes. Alas I forgot that the folder/s are actually located in the Documents folder but I had totally disregarded the actual document folder itself when I replied. I take it that the Documents folder itself should also have the permissions set and in this case maybe I should have never placed the files in the Documents folder to start with but should have maybe used Public or even created a new top directly altogether?

I am now more confused than ever because nothing shows up for the shared folder when I log into the Mac as say Simon. However if I log in as Simon, go to settings, sharing and double click on the shared folder which shows up it takes me into the folder. However when I try to access the folder via the home folder is shows no entry and when I double click on it nothing is shown.

I think I am going to move the files out of Documents to either Public or a totally new folder on its own. Set the permissions from the top down (as you said to start with; silly me) share the folder and see what happens. I will update again whether or not it works. Your time with this has been invaluable and I appreciate it very much indeed!

Thanks.

hi
I'm using OSX Server 10.10.1 and have the same problem like Stefan, spotlight isn't working for my client's
yes it is a problem of permissions… the users are set as Lokal Networkusers they which have the permissions on the networkvolumes there searching but not for the index file which I believe are stored on the system disc !

should I set the rights via ACL 's on the whole system disc ?

Thanks for any Help
