if i purchase the new os x, will it save all my files automatically or do I need back everything up onto an external or i lose it all?

If I purchase the new os x, do I need to first back all my stuff up on an external, then transfer it back or will the mac automatically do this for me?

Yes, all your files and settings will be kept unless you specifically wipe your drive beforehand.
