is the fingerprint sensor a requirement to use on the iPhone 5S?
Can I still use my password if I want or turn off the fingerprint sensor on the upcoming iPhone 5S?

Yes, you don't have to use the fingerprint deal.
This is what I want to hear, but I'd like to confirm it myself. Where did you get your information? And does Apple itself say that somewhere on this site? If so, where?
Apple has told news outlets that there is still a passcode for use in case the fingerprint sensor does not work for some reason. They have not yet said, at least that I've seen, whether it will be possible to turn off the fingerprint sensor and just use the passcode. We'll have to wait for additional information from Apple.
Regards.
Well, Apple has stated to the WSJ that the scanner sometimes doesn't work with moisture-laden fingers covered in sweat, lotion or other liguids. Further, fingers scarred by surgery or accidents. And, if the phone is reset or not unlocked for at least 48hrs, only the passcode will unlock it. And, remember, Apple says this is an "improvement" from such scanners in the past. Thus, unless Apple is planning on long lines at the genius bar or returns, there will be a setting to disable this.
In other words: 'common sense' is one of many sources of this information.
Yep.
