Wifi will not turn on after updating to 10.8.5

I updated to Mountain Lion 10.8.5 on my 2008 model MacBook and now I cannot turn on the wifi. I go to System Preferences, Network then click on wifi. I click Turn Wi-Fi On but it doesn't respond.

I've tried three things to fix it:

1) reboot

2) Deleted all Network settings and created a new WiFi profile

3) Went to Apple, About This Mac, More Info...., System Report, Wifi

There is a lot of information in this window but the status says Off.

Any advice for me to get my WiFi working again?

Back up all data, then reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

None of the supplied "answers" worked for me. After a restart, I was unable to turn on the wireless function. Deleted prefs; boot into Safe Mode and then restart; remove from power and let rest for 3-10 minutes; PRAM and SMC reset; deleting wifi and bluetooth from within Network settings, then adding anew; none of it made an bit of difference.

I reinstalled 10.8 over 10.8.5. Then I applied the 10.8.4 COMBO updater. (I also tried a reinstall and the 10.8.5 combo updater. But the lost-wifi-after-restart remained in the 10.8.5 reinstall.)

That works.

Do not update to 10.8.5 is the only sure-fire solution I found.

Why on earth would someone with no problem be here, at this thread, taking advise from someone WITH a problem?

And reinstalling the OS is not at all difficult on OS X. Newer models phone to Apple to reinstall the OS - all from the Recovery disk. It is not reckless. Not even hard.

But I wonder why anyone would find a random "problem" and try to apply it to their machine that does not have the problem? Can you tell me that?

Not hard to explain. I'll give it another go in case others find it odd I fixed this problem with a software reinstall:

This thread was started because after updating to 10.8.5 some people lost WiFi.

Many of those people were, like my client, using a Macbook 2008 Unibody.

Apple's forum is rife with people who have this problem.

I tried all the solutions proffered and only one worked for me. It has also worked for others.

Reinstalling the OS up to 10.8.4 worked.

It was not reckless. I did not give up. It was done carefully, thoughtfully, and deliberately because all the other solutuions offered up had not worked.

Now my client can use her Mabook's WiFi function, even when she turns the machine on from a cold start. That wasn't possible for her in 10.8.5.

And this makes no sense to you? I do not have this problem with my Macbook Pro. My neighbor does not have this problem with her Mac Mini. A client did have this problem with a Macbook 2008. Her Macbook now works, and now I await Apple to fix the problem permanently - something I cannot do.

I had the same wifi problem with a late 2008 macbook after recently updating to 10.8.5. I re-installed the OS X on Thursday Oct 3, it made no difference. However, I tried again the folowing day (exactly same procedure, holding cmd-R during restart) and now the wifi works perfectly... The reinstalled version is 10.8.5.

A similar problem also for my Mac Book 15" mid 2012.

The difference is that wi-fy goes down only when I plug in any USB device.

If I reboot all is fine (USB not pugged in) but when I plug in my external SSD wi-fy stay up for a few but lose network and after disconnect.

I try expelling eSSD turning OFF and ON wi-fy but nothing to do if I don't restart system.

I think Apple made some mistake releasing this patch!!

Wifi will not turn on after updating to 10.8.5
