Are there known issues in 10.8.5

Well after the 10.8.5 updates my Macbook Pro developed the black band on the external monitor problem and has now died completely. No power even though the PSU is outputting the correct voltages. Conincidence? It could be.

Anyone any ideas of what tests I can do inside the Mac to establish if the problem is hardware related? I have as mentioned tested the power supply it is ok.

I have an early 2008 15" MBP 4.1 which froze after upgrading to 10.8.5 (from 10.8.4). I couldn't do anything, it froze as soon as I tried to start a program. I didn't have a backup for 10.8.4 so I decided to reinstall 10.8.5 (not clean) and that fixed my problem. So it is possible to run 10.8.5 on an old MBP.

I rebooted with alt pressed and chose the "Recover from" alternative. I chose reinstall OS (I had to enable WiFi) and after aprox. 30 min of installation it rebooted and has now been running for 3 days without problems.

I installed the update yesterday, ive been running 10.8.4 no issues, laziness took over and i didnt back up 1st, my last backup was 3rd sept

Today my internet connection kept failing, on checking on my other mac which ive left on snow leopard ... ! internet connection was fine.

rebooted my router and mac and all seemed well for around 3 mins, then the internet went off again, so I rebooted, a few mins later, pointer froze, rebooted, then the startup froze, rebooted then the chime repeated over and over and over ...

I restored the time machine to one i did this morning, formatted the drive and re installed the backup from today, so far so good, but if it freezes again I will copy over all the files from 3rd sept onwards (work) and restore back to 10.8.4

I moved away from PC's in 2009 for this very reason ....snow leopard update I couldnt connect to my wireless drive, on the lion update I lost battery life, now this ... COME ON APPLE, I PAID £2500 for a Mac not a PC !!!

yes .. its very bad.. dont update.. i did an updated.. it causes weird screen jettring.. was no longer smooth max/min and even popot windows. called tech support and as always .. was not helpfull at all..

ended up formating and going back to 10.8.3 . everythying works well now..

Apple lately been doing lots of mess up on software.. sad

I have a late 2011 MBP 13" and I have excatly the same freeze issues. mostly when attempting to log in after closing the machine or after machine goes into sleep. However, the error is not exclusive to that condition in that the machine will freeze sometimes while im browsing on the internet or working in mail. This started after I upgraded to 10.8.5 from 10.8.4.

So - not "old" MBP

I have also reset the SCM and PRAM. without success

for those interested - since I agree that I should not, as a consumer, have to wonder about the stability of my computer or its supplier provided updates being suspect - these are my machine specs:

Ok well after re intalling 10.8.5 BACKUP all has been well, until 10 mins ago, wifi started going off again, then the machine started to freeze again, after several restarts, i got a mesage when clciking wifi which said no wifi hardware installed ... I believe part of the 10.8.5 was a wifi update ?

I restarted and held apple r went into the menu did a disk check all fine, restarted and im on it now all seems ok

later today I will backup all my files from 3rd sept then reinstall 10.8.4 my last backup point for this version ...

Apple is now costing me time and money ... im not a gamer my mac is for my design business...

Im beginning to re look at the PC market. at least when you spend a 1/3rd the price of a mac, you can accept issues like this ... pffft !

Fixed the problem - I'm not technical so bare with me 🙂

After a lot of internet research and forcing the macbook to freeze consistantly i figured it was something to do with waking up the HDD / SSD after pause or sleep - so energy saving.

Anyway I learned from the SSD manufacturer that a stability issue in certain cases for memory or SSD devices does occur and in my case the issue could be resolved with a firmware update.

I followed the instructions which included creating a boot USB disk and runinng a piece of software at boot time thus updating the SSD firmware.

Result is that The machine has run for 24 hours without fail even after me trying to force the freeze situation as I did consistantly previous to the update.

Late '11 15" Pro here. Installed the .5 update on Saturday - but didn't use it much after that until this morning. Woke it up to weird video glitches and after hard freezes, reboots, kernel panics and SCM, PRAM reset it it's DOA. I can get to bootmanger and the FileVault preboot loging screen but they have horizontal blue lines across and won't boot OS X (locks at a grey screen now) and my Win7 bootcamp on a separate drive (where the DVD used to be) has thick vertical blue bars and BSODs entering the desktop saying it was unable to reset the video driver - timeout.

I have an early 2009 MacBook Pro (5,1). I recently upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.8.5. I have been getting system freezes at least once a day. Appears to be when in a full sleep or display sleep mode.

I cannot go back to 10.8.4, as some have reported, because I was on a much older version before the move to Mountain Lion. I may have to go back to the Snow Leopard.

couldn't really find anything useful in the console logs.

in the last couple of days, I have noticed the freezes seem to occur only when on external power. It's still fairly random, and I'll keep an eye on the power thing.

had the daily freeze again. power source is not a factor -- happens when on battery or external power. and today it was not associated with any sleep state; I was actively using the computer, and it simply became unresponsive. Never had this issue in 4 years of using Leopard and Snow Leopard on this device.

I have tried zapping the PRAM/SMC a couple of times, so I guess doing that has not solved the freezing issue.

This is awful. Even my Windows systems are more stable than this.

I had that once while working on a doc - the machine just froze and I had to power down. Does your machine have an SSD drive? I fixed my freeze issue by updating the SSD firmware. my drive is an OCZ-Vector in case this helps.. been running since 3 October without a freeze.

Thanks for the info. I have a Seagate Momentus XT 750GB Hybrid drive [2nd gen, ST750LX003] that I've been running for about 2 years. I've been checking the Seagate site every few months to look for firmware updates, but they don't have any for my specific drive. I don't think there's been an update since I put the drive in 2 years ago. The product is now discontinued [they have a new line of hybrid drives], so I don't expect any miracle updates from Seagate for this.

Perhaps now I should move to a full SSD; I had been playing with the idea even before this episode.

Note: I rolled back to my 10.6.8 backup earlier today, and everything has been working great. Just cannot have daily freezes on my primary system. Perhaps I'll try 10.8.5 again if I get an SSD [or wait for 10.9].

I think I have solution after a long way...

In 10.8.5 and 10.9 when I turn off wifi my mac freezes immediatly.

to solve it

I boot on my "secours" disk with OS 10.8.4 and i delete this file from the frozen system :

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

reboot on 10.8.5 or 10.9 and don't turn wifi off again

and it works 😎

I hope Apple can fix it

with regard to mid2007 freezing after instal, updating ssd firmware was not a fix for me. After the instal of update to 10.8.5 I can not get to the login window, much less a working OS. so I am NOT talking about freezes after loging into a working desktop environement. I'm talking about getting to the grey screen with the apple log and a spinning wheel that freezes. I updated firmware on ssd (on drive bus) =same freeze. I instaled 10.8.5 on spindle drive (super drive bus) = same freeze. I did a clean instal on both (to eliminate 3rd party software conflict like istat etc)=same freeze. I clean installed 10.8.2 on ext. drive which ran fine, then applied update 10.8.5 = same freeze. I booted in verbose mode and in every case the offending error seems to be smc errors which are related to low level fans/power usage.

The ONLY reason I'm adding this late post to this thread is to let people know that I also tried several upgrade instals of Mavericks=same freeze, So the first relase of Mavericks does not fix this code.
