OSX 10.8.5 Update HDMI sound not output after source switch

I have the same problem on my Mac Mini Late 2013, after upgrading to 10.8.5. No sound over HDMI after wake up my computer, only reboot can help. By it's stupid to restart each time to hear the sound...

Same thing happens on my MBA Mid 2011. Thought it was my monitor until I saw this thread.

Happens to me as well on my 2012 13inch macbook air

I'm using a thunderbolt to hdmi adapter (moshi) and an apple hdmi cable. My monitor has internal speakers and also i have external speakers connected to the audio port on the monitor.

A reboot fixes the audio, until the laptop sleeps then it just never comes back via Hdmi.

I have the same issue here with my 2012 mac mini. Hesitant to install this update on anything else as a result. Sounds like this is related to HDMI. Has anyone installed this update on something that _doesn't_ use HDMI? Like does it affect optical output or the old-school speaker output (or even internal speakers)? Everything else here is using the line-out; the mac mini was the only one using HDMI. While I can deal with the mac mini and rebooting it (seems that will temporarily fix it until next sleep), I really do need this update on the other production macs due to the security fixes it includes. If it's just HDMI-related then I can upgrade the mac pro, imac, and mba but if it affects the line out as well, then I can't since I just can't reboot whenever I can't listen to my tunes.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

I chatted with Apple Support about this to be sure they knew about the issue. There are known fixes for the issue. I've found there are two ways to fix it.

1. reboot
2. Use the digital out to a receiver. This is unaffected by the HDMI issue and no reboot is required.

Thank goodness, i thought this was just me, my mini is my first Mac. It will sometimes come back if you switch to internal speakers and back in Audio Midi setup but this seems to only work sporadically. I'm going to have to set to never sleep and not reboot until this is fixed which is a massive pain

I had the same issue with my 2011 Mac Mini, and resolved it by restoring to a 10.8.4 backup from Time Machine. With any luck this will get ironed out in 10.9.

After the 10.8.5 update HDMI sound does not function after the computer sleeps.

I can reproduce this isssue both with sound over HDMI and over Displayport on 10.8.5. POn 10.8.4 I had no issue with that. After suspending no sound, itunes does not show progress when trying to play music

This happens to my MacBook Air, 2012 edition. I updated to 10.8.5.

Now, after the notebook wakes up from sleep, I hear no sound on my external monitor, which has speakers.

I had to restart to solve the problem. This is very frustrating.

I have the exact same problem, on a 2011 Mac Mini. Sleep kills sound over HDMI. VERY frustrating!

This is very frustrating. After waking up mac (mini 2011) rebooting is the only fix for me to get the sound back. Not very optimal though for using mac as a media center...
