OSX 10.8.5 Update HDMI sound not output after source switch

Upgraded my Mac Mini this morning with latest update. Ever since, everytime I switch source on my TV from one to another, I'm not garanteed to have sound being output on my Mac Mini. Only solution is to reboot.

Am I the only one facing this kind of issue???

I have a strong feeling that those having problems may be in the same boat with regard to running rogue amoeba software or some other software.

It is always a good idea to check third party developer's web sites, FAQ pages, support blogs, etc. to make sure you have the latest version of their stuff & that there are no known issues with the latest OS X updates.

The only third party sound app I had installed was Perian. After a Perian removal and reinstall of the original patch, sound still did not return after a sleep. I suspect that there was a core issue affecting the HDMI output. If it was simply third party apps, I suspect Apple would be less inclined to release a supplemental.

On a positive note, things seem to be working for me. I do have a question though...when you place your computer in sleep mode manually, does it seem to take longer to go to sleep. I don't know if it is taking the same amount of time, or I am paying closer attention to the time it takes and I get impatient for it to close down.

Thanks.

I have a mid-2011 2.3 Ghz with 8GB memory. I don't have sound when in fullscreen iTunes connected to a Thunderbolt display. If I exit full screen it works no problem. I have all the latest software updates for OS 10.8 and iTunes.

BTW, the system settings say the sound is connected USB to the Thunderbolt Display.

I am running 10.8.5 12F45. I would think this wouldn't be an issue because it's all Apple hardware running.

I have the same problem as everyone else. I'm using a late 2012 mini running 10.8.5 build 12F45. After sleep I have no audio via optical or hdmi. My primary use is optical out to a home theater reciever. I can usually get the optical to work after changing the output settings in sound prefs back and forth a few times. I had upgraded recently to Mavericks and the problem actually got worse. If by some miracle I was able to get the optical out to work the audio was usually accompanied by loud white noise. OK so I wiped the drive and reloaded Mountain Lion via internet recovery and that gave me 10.8.5 12F45. This is a bare install. I have nothing installed other than the basic Apple apps and Plex Media Server. The problem is still there!! I would have gone back to 10.8.4 if I had a backup that old. As others have said I'll just leave the mini running for the time being. Feedback left with Apple.

Same problem here. Before Mavericks, sound just wouldn't work after my Mid 2012 13in Macbook Pro with 8 gb ram went to sleep. Only thing that would fix the issue was reboot. Now after upgrading to mavericks, the sound through hdmi works no problem as long as the laptop is open and I am mirroring displays. Even if the laptop goes to sleep. But if I close the laptop and use in clamshell mode with my external display I no longer have the option for HDMI for my sound output

I never had this problem before with my Mac mini (Jan 2012) and my LG TV (2010). Both worked fine together with no issues. The audio problem started when I upgraded to Mavericks (Nov 2013).

It is very sporadic, it just happens, apparently when the computer is not being used (though is not sleeping). I've noticed the problem gets fixed if I restart the Mac Mini or if I unplug the HDMI cable and plug it back. But it is a pain and non of these solutions is ideal.

I've managed to solve it sometimes playing with the audio settings, but does not follow a pattern, so I have no recipe to fix it. Turning off/on the TV fixes it sometimes, but not all the time.

Hope there is a Mavericks upgrade soon with a fix for this issue.

Hi do you still have the same issue - since updating from 10.8.4 to 10.8.5 - my sony tv is no longer detected - sometime a reboot will work or i have to play around with HDMI slots but most of the time it will detect my tv - is anyone has a fix for that?

by pressing alt key and pressing on dectect display does not make any difference - and i no longer have the .4 version at hand

Thx

This remains a problem, and we are now half way through 2014.

I have left a feedback report - but clearly these are not acted upon as many people here claim to have left feedback, for much earlier versions (I am on 10.9.3), yet the problem persists.

If it's not fixed in the next upgrade, I'm going to have to return the laptop under 'not fit for purpose' consumer legislation - as it was purchased specifically as a media server.

Hi everybody,

My 2012 Mac mini doing the same thing. Even if you have multiple user accounts, and log out, after I log in with another user name the same sound freezing problem occurs. It is very annoying, every time I need to restart…..

Also I don't think is a hdd related problem, as I have two ssd in my Mac mini.

There is no solution yet, and I am terribly unsatisfied of apple's behaviour dealing with problems.

My first bad experience was that only 4 days after the recall ended of my macbook pro's nvidia problem, there was no way to change it, only if I pay a lot of money. It is ridicoulus. First of all, they sending me emails, and updates, receiving details from my computer, they should let me know that I am using a faulty equipment. Even Nvidia said they are responsible for that, so I bought an already bad product. There should not be a limit how long I can change the faulty part if it was (hidden) faulty from the beginning. Also, I don't see why I should check apple's website to find out where they made a mistake, and if it is affecting my computer or not. THEY SHOULD INFORM ME about that. So because of that I had to buy another apple product, as I had to work with logic, and there is no alternative.

And now my mac mini started to do this freezing stuff…...

I am very annoyed.
