OSX 10.8.5 Update HDMI sound not output after source switch

Upgraded my Mac Mini this morning with latest update. Ever since, everytime I switch source on my TV from one to another, I'm not garanteed to have sound being output on my Mac Mini. Only solution is to reboot.

Am I the only one facing this kind of issue???

If it helps anyone, here's how I worked around it. I'm not saying it will work for everyone, but it worked for me.

I switched HDMI ports on my TV. From HDMI1 to another port.

This reminded me of an issue that happened with the old SCSI ports on my Mac 7200/90. After an update the one I had my ZIP drive plugged into, suddenly stopped working. It was a pain, so I unplugged it and tried the second SCSI port, which worked. First one stayed as it was until the next update, then it was fine, which will most likely be the case for this issue.

Like I said, it may not work for everyone, but it worked for me. Now when my mini wakes from sleep, I have sound.

I get sound back by going into System Preferences > Sound > Selecting the sound output device by highlighting it and then clicking on the volume control which then outputs the blip noise telling me I have sound again.

Thanks for that hint man, I was rebooting my system every time I came back to my PC and it had fallen asleep.

No doubt this is due to the changes they are pushing into Mavericks (particularly around their new, multi-monitor support), hopefully this means free Mavericks for everyone that posted on this thread right 😉

Ha. Feedback is entertaining: 10.8.5 isn't even an option on the dropdown menu. Maybe they didn't mean to have released it yet ...

I've not got this problem with the OS - mine is the fact that its screwed up my (previously perfect) ability to stream to Apple TV. Makes me think they want to encourage me to use iTunes Match and not Spotify ...

Is this working for you?

I am still not able to use HDMI output. Selecting it in the sound output fails and it jumps back to another selection.

I noticed I have soundflower installed (from a migration), but that audio hijack doesn't seem to know it. Airfoil is installed too.

I have a strong feeling that those having problems may be in the same boat with regard to running rogue amoeba software or some other software.

I went into /Library/Extensions and whacked it and rebooted but still no luck.

It is always a good idea to check third party developer's web sites, FAQ pages, support blogs, etc. to make sure you have the latest version of their stuff & that there are no known issues with the latest OS X updates.

From what I can tell from Rogue Amoeba's site, both Airfoil for Mac v 4.8.1 & Audio Hijack Pro v 2.10.8 should be OK for use with OS X 10.7.0 through 10.8.5, so make sure you have those versions installed.

Soundflower I'm not so sure about. I know that in the past some users have had problems with it installed that reportedly vanished when it was removed, but I don't know if the current version has any problems.

It is also possible that since all of these products modify audio either the Rogue Amoeba ones or Soundflower work OK when used alone but not when Soundflower plus one or both of the Rogue Amoeba ones are installed at the same time. You might want to test for that, too.
