Program crashes - libdispatch-manager

My iMac has developed a problem with AOL Desktop for Mac that renders it (AOL) unusable. The problem is that when AOL opens, even before logging on, it shows an empty email tempate with all buttons grayed out. This appears to be something that has survived from a previous session when the session was interrupted by AOL unexpectedly quitting. If I close the template by clicking on the red circle with X at top left, AOL crashes, and the report lists the crashed thread as "1 Dispatch queue: com.apple.libdispatch-manager." If I simply try to log into my AOL account, it crashes but with a different crashed thread: "0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread." This problem persists after uninstalling and reinstalling AOL Desktop several times. AOL support wizards were unable to fix the problem, but I wonder if the problem is a corrupted file outside the AOL program. Comments welcome. I can post the entire text of a report if of value. Thanks.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Whew, not much to go on with that info, but...

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive

Reboot, test again.

If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.

Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Thank you for the response. I will work through your suggestions. An odd thing I have noticed is that when I used the disk utility to check permissions on my HD, it gave me the message: permissions differ on "usr/lib/ruby"; should be lrwxr-xr-x; they are drwxr-xr-x. I ran Repair Permissions. Got message Permissions Repair Completed. I also ran Verify Disk. Disk appears to be OK. I opened AOL Destop, and again it crashed when I tried to log in. I ran check permissions again, and got the same result as above: permissions differ on "usr/lib/ruby"; should be lrwxr-xr-x; they are drwxr-xr-x. I repaired permissions. Got a message it was complete. Immediately ran check permissions again. Same result: permissions differ on "usr/lib/ruby"; should be lrwxr-xr-x; they are drwxr-xr-x. I also noticed that AOL Desktop showed both in the Disk Utility Repair window and on Finder as an external device! In the repair window, each device, if active appears as two lines. For example, for my HD, the first line is "1 TB ST31000528AS Media, and the second line, indented, Macintosh HD. (I selected the second line to run repair permissions.) For AOL Desktop, the first line is AOL_Desktop_for_Mac-1 9.1850 AM.dmg. dmg is the extension of the AOL installer file (which I deleted after installation). Does this just muddy the water?
