Can't use USB Flash Drive

original (OLD) headset config. was created by Nokia and has a pinout of Left Audio, Right Audio, Mic, Ground.

Apple has their pinout to Left Audio, Right Audio, Ground, Mic.

This is why many apple headsets will not work with android, because the last 2 connections, for Mic and Ground are switched.

I should have defined "standard" meaning "most modern headset devices out there" 😐

I have exactly the same problem with two HP usb drives on my MBP Retina 15" 15 months old. Worked for 2 months then I think there was a 10.8 point update and they stopped working. I was hoping that 10.9 woud fix it but no. On my son's MBP Retina 15" (3 months old) I can see them just fine! I think it must be a 3rd party software conflict.

I've got a 16gb Sandisk that I've tried to open in X for hours with no luck. I go through parellels and it operates just like it did on my 3yr old $600.00 laptop. My new MacBook Air with Mac software? This is why I googled this issue and why I'm here seeing that others are having the same problem.

I am having the same problem mounting the Sandisk 16GB SD card memory from my Canon camera. I have it installed in a SanDisk Micromate SDcard to USB adapter. This combination mounts perfectly in my Mac Mini running Mac OS 10.6.8. So the recommendation that SanDisk produts work always is not strictly true. I believe that the problem is that Mac OS 10.8.5 is not so lienient when encountering foreign file formats as Mac OS 10.6.8 is.

Where I have trouble is in my wife's new MacBookPro circa summer 2013 that runs Mac OS 10.8.5.

I have no trouble seeing the SDcard in 10.8.5 Disk Utility. Whether it will mount I cannot say, but I can also plug into another USB port a SanDisk Cruzer 16GB and it mounts correctly.

I believe that my problem is that the Cruzer is formatted in Windows NTFS format and the Sandisk in the Micromate USB adapter is fomatted in MS-DOS (FAT32). The icon representng the Cruzer is the familiar orange color with the USB synbol, while the icon of the Sandisk in the USB adapter is the same as a .dmg file.

If I can find another machine to convert the format from FAT32 to NTFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and it cures the problem I will post another message.

In the meantime, those who read this and can see the malfunctioning drive, please report what the file format of your malfunctioning drive is.

I didn't consult the Console when I wrote that recommendation.

Did you open Disk Utility and then plug in the pendrive? If so did the device show up in Disk Utility?

I will try seeingwhat happens when I plug in my drive when lookign at Console.

So the problem you have and what I have are obviously different. I believe that my problem is that Mac OS 10.8.5 apparently doesn't properly mount MS-DOS FAT32 format. It is recognized as such by Disk Utility, so maybe the problem is a bug in Mountain Lion. I am not going to hold my breath for that to be repaired.

We should all understand that Sandisk and other pendrive makers are shipping their products with a Lowest-Common-Denomenator format, and they must still think that is MSDOS. At least the SD cards I bought only last year had FAT 32.

I too had this problem with a 64GB PNY after upgrading to Mavericks; what did it for me was using a USB extention with the USB stick, it was picked up instantly.

I guess this is a similar problem. While not a total noob sometimes I don't dig deeply into the technical aspects of my machine, which is a late model Macbook Pro running Mavericks.

Awhile ago I decided I wanted to store a bunch of my mp3's on my USB memory stick, which is a 16G Duracell. Everything seemed fine.

Lately I have been updating all of my banking records, having just had a difficult time with my tax person because things weren't exactly in good order. So I spent a BUNCH of time downloading and catagorizing data, and things are fairly squared away now. I backed up my iBank data on the thumb drive holding down the option key while dragging the data file onto the drive.

Now all I see on the USB drive is the latest iBank file. It shows files added in the last 30 days and I can't figure out how to access older files, if they are even still there.

Probably an easy fix but not for me. Any ideas?
