iTunes Match issues on iOS 7

I have been using iOS 7 since the release of the GM. Overall, I love it - however with the music app, specifically with iTunes Match I am very dissapointed as the usability, for me has gone quite backwards.

Firstly, I have some artists in my collection with vast ammounts of albums (Grateful Dead, Phish, etc). With iOS 6, accessing those artist's albums was instantaneous. In iOS 7, it takes approximately 10-15 seconds from the time I tap the artist to being able to view the albums. When trying to return to the Artists tab, it will also hang for at least 10 seconds.

Second, once within the albums of a particular artist, there is no longer the alphabetical slider along the side which allows me to quickly scrub through the albums. When there are a lot of albums, scrolling manually through every album (and song) is quite tedious. I honestly can't believe how much of a step back this is. Albums no longer are listed alphabetically, now they are listed based on release date.

These issues have me wihing I coud go back to iOS 6, even though the rest of the new interface is great. I can't believe how much worse the music app is now. I can't believe no one at Apple has a music library containing artists with large discographies.

If there isn't a fix to these issues, I will have to cancel my iTunes Match subscription because it is simply too frustrating waiting for things to load and not being able to browse albums efficiently.

If anyone is aware of a fix, or is also frustrated by these issues, please let me know.

Good one jjmf!

I had a simpler set of problems than all of you, and found peace in turning off iTM entirely and doing a hard sync via USB cable and manually managing songs during the sync. I finally did a Restore of the phone in iTunes in order to clean the slate entirely. The phone now has all my songs, and I am comfortable with putting new songs on my laptop and doing a hard sync again. [512atx recommended as much in another thread -- link above somewhere]

I agree that there are probably new hidden bugs involving the trilogy of iTunes, iCloud, and iOS 7.0.2 but until Apple makes everything internally consistent -- we bleed.

Have you read the new User Guide for iOS 7? There may be some clues in there for you.

Well we have been with iOS 7 for too long and have been seeing more and more problems throughout the entire system. But iTunes Match and the Music App seem to be hurting more than anything and I find this funny since Apple "Loves Music" so much. Here is everything so far from what I have experienced:

- iTunes Match Infinite "Loading Bar" (fixed by network settings)

- Album art completely missing (fixed with Full Restore)

- Music stuck in Landscape Album View (fixed with rotating phone over and over)

- Songs in iCloud will not download (fixed with continuously hitting the cloud download button and getting lucky)

- Custom Playlists not appearing (temporary fix by Full Restore; problem returned)

- Editing Playlists crashes the Music App (no found fix so far)

- Quick Music Controls in Control Center Do not work (fixed open music app and manually tap play)

- New Music not auto-downloaded to iPhone or iPad (Auto-Download is on in settings; no fix)

- Purchased music randomly not appearing in songlist directly after purchase (fixed with Restarting Phone)

This list is pretty scary when you consider that these are all of the bugs and errors I have seen in just the "MUSIC" app so far!! Funny to me, my dad hated iOS7 SOOOO much that he went to Best Buy and bought an iPhone 5 that they still had with iOS6 on it! We also went to our local Apple store and beleive it or not but the worker on the floor told my dad that a lot of the older people are coming in to try and downgrade, and that his supervisor even hates his phone now!

Apple, you are planning to bring out new iPads and Macbooks this year, and then begin working on TV Products, more New iPhones and iPads, Wearable Tech and more next year and your company can't spend the time to fix all of these issues?? I had these issues in every string of my beta with iOS7... whoever decided that the beta was good enough should probably be taken off of the Software Team. I get more reliability in features and software from Google now!

Gleaning two positives from above, which have worked well for me:

-- Restart Phone [hard restart holding down both home and on/off buttons until white apple logo appears]

-- Full Restore [in iTunes -- radical move so read up on it, back up the phone first, etc.]

These two steps are now a "must do" for problems IMO -- a sad state of affairs for Mac fans everywhere.

One is reminded of the Apple Maps fiasco when it was released. Will Cook have to apologize publicly for the unholy trinity of problems with iOS 7, iTunes and iCloud?

The thing is, with this iTunes Match/Music/iOS 7 fiasco, I have not really seen it take any headlines anywhere, and that is mostly because the masses don't subscribe to iTM, and hence, don't have many of the Music app-related issues we face.

One thing I believe strongly in is that regardless of how many "I FIXED IT by..." posts there are here, none of them are a permanent fix. They are band-aids, and for all the trouble it is to reset an iPhone and restore it, only for it to work for a week or two is too much trouble for me. Until Apple gives us an iOS update that specifically says it addresses the iTM issues, I pretty much ignore all the "I FIXED IT" posts because their problems will come back to haunt them again.

My iTunes match mostly works, but sometimes, out of the blue, it starts acting up again. Items that are physically ON the iPhone seemingly are gone. That is my main issue.

The whole iTM thing is majorly broken in iOS 7. Apple should be considering giving everyone a free 1 YR renewal to iTM when they finally fix this for all the time and effort and frustration we have endured.

By leaving iTM on, you are "consenting" IMO to having your local song files on the phone removed when iTM kicks in per the new User Guide we discussed recently. This may be new to iOS7. And at a minimum Apple should have been clear about the items to be LOST by dropping iOS6 so folks could choose their poison.

If you move in and out of WIFI coverage the above will happen each time IMO.

As i've stated before, I disagree with your interpretation of the new user manual. I do not believe the iTM that is part of iOS7 is designed to remove manually downloaded cloud-based music at it's own whim. The ability to listen to downloaded music without network access is a feature that would render the service useless if they changed that.

According to the user manual you frequently refer to, it explicitly states that SYNCED music is removed (which differs from DOWNLOADED music) when you enable iTM, but Downloaded music is ONLY removed when space is needed on the iPhone.

Below are some snippets of info from the user manual and the FAQ page for iTunes Match.

The behavior we are experiencing is NOT a feature or expected, it's a bug and is hindering the functionality of iTM that Apple designed into it.

From page 63 of said user manual:

Note: When iTunes Match is on, downloaded music is automatically removed from iPhone as

space is needed, starting with the oldest and least-played songs. An iCloud icon ( ) appears

next to removed songs and albums, showing that the songs and albums are still available

through iCloud but not stored locally on iPhone.

From the iTunesMatch FAQ:

Does iTunes Match stream or download songs?
On a computer, any songs stored in iCloud will stream over the air when played, though you can download them at any time by clicking the iCloud download button. iOS devices will start playing tracks from iCloud as they download and will store them so that you can listen to them later even if you don’t have a network connection. Apple TV only streams songs.

Mine appears to have been a permanent fix. I've had no problems with iTunes or iTunes match since I followed the steps suggested several days ago on this thread (October 4).

Mine was working for over a week, as well, until one day it started doing the same thing again. So, for me, a week wasn't permanent. 🙂

Well, I am out to nearly two weeks now. No problems. Of course, I did order the 5S, which should be showing up around the end of the month according to the Apple Store; so we'll see what happens when I set it up and get it running... :-)

I think that it is an itunes thing... I just got off the phone with tech support at Apple, and they said there is a problem going on in itunes, affecting a number of users... I shared the whole gamut of issues that we're talking about here including the way its affecting the apple Tv universe. They kicked it up to a senior tech, who referred it to engineering. So it is new, it is a problem that isn't resolved. It has been reported by other users, and Apple confesses that they "own it" right now. Stay tuned. Probably a background software update.

Hi all, I recently came across the issue many of you were noting regarding iTunes Match wiping out synced music on the device. This is beyond stupid. Previously, you were able to sync any music to your device and then turn on iTunes Match. If I have a 64 GB iPhone and iPad, why should I have to download music and have to use valuable, limited bandwith when it's available on my computer? It's just ridiculous.

That said, I think I may have found a solution. I did some searching and saw this blog post. According to the writer, if you follow these steps, it'll allow you to sync music, then turn on iTunes Match and keep all synced music.

I'm currently trying it right now. It's taking a while, but if anyone else wants to give it a shot, here you go.

OK, this is getting very bizarre. Four newly purchased songs from the iTunes store that I added to a playlist took over 6 hours to appear in the Music app playlist on my iPhone 5s. Exactly 2 hours later, 1 of the 4 showed in iCloud status.

When I attempted to download that 1 song, again the whole playlist listing shakes or quivers up and down. But this time, the download circle almost completed and then it literally reversed itself (i.e. the circle went counter-clockwise) until it was back to the start position and then the iCloud icon re-appeared.

The more I'm thinking about this, it's got to be a back-end iTunes Match problem that the phone is unable to either read or "interpret" the match files so it routinely goes haywire. None of this happens when ITM is disabled and the phone is manually synced with iTunes on my Mac Mini.
