iOS 7 and Audiobook Chapters

iOS 7 seems to have removed the ability to view individual audiobook chapters in the music app. It has also replaced the chapter length with the length of the entire book in the time scrubber. When tapping the top right-hand corner to access the list of chapters, now it only shows one file for the whole book, whereas before it listed all the chapters, just like it lists all the songs in an album. This change applies to my own audiobooks created using the Mac Audiobook Builder app and to Audible downloads. I haven't tried it on an iTunes purchased audiobook.

If I manage to lose my place, scrubbing (even using quarter-speed or fine) through a 30+ hour audiobook is...let's be polite and say "challenging." I really liked knowing where I was in a chapter, being able to see how much time was left, being able to view the list of chapters, etc. My hope is I'm just missing something here and some iOS 7 wizard can show me how to correct this. But I suspect Apple's just updated the app.

This is not remotely ideal as a solution, but it's a workaround if you have access to the original chapter mp3 files (eg, if you download books from Librivox): Instead of using Audiobook Builder to combine the chapter files into a single audiobook, convert the chapter files from mp3 to audiobook files via iTunes. Make sure that they are all given the same album name and that the chapters are in the correct order. Then sync the entire list of files to the iPhone.

The Music app will list them together as a single album, but will list the chapters as separate tracks. It will also indicate each track's read/unread/partially-read status in the list, so you should be able to find your place when you leave and come back.

Thisis a terrible ommission on Apple's part and perhaps they will correct it in IOS 8 or 9. Until they do, I highly recommend this wonderful APP that solves this problem partially. Though it doesn't show the chapters as we would like, it does give much more control over gonging back and forth in a chapter if you lose your way. You can move by minutes or second at a time. It also has a sleep timer so you don't fall asleep and miss an entire portion of your book. It's called AUDIOBOOKS and I highly recommend it.

Apple should be ASHAMED of the iOS crap they are turning out lately.
They have had three iOS updates to get the “Audiobook Chapter Text” issue resolved …. and they still can’t get it done right. iOS4 was the last iOS that “Audiobook Chapters” could read the actual text of the chapter title.

Apple employees, you are working for a company that seems like it just can’t get it’s act together anymore, since the passing of Steve Jobs. Jobs never would have let you get away with the crappy GUI on the newer “Audiobook Chapter Text” issues.

FIX THE AUDIOBOOK CHAPTER TEXT/TITLE READING ABILITY … it’s not rocket science, you had it once … just bring it back like you had it !!!!!!!!!!!!

SInce this issue of no chapters has not been resolved, and as far as I know no one from Apple has publicly addressed it...or notified anyone with a fix date, I think we should start writing the tech publications, online magazine (ALL) and tweet or wherever people...real users notice the info that this is broken... i.e. everyone in media who made such a fuss about broken maps. This is just as bad. Ever notice that when your iPhone or iPad indicates that you have an App update your only choice is to ignore it, or update it? If you ignore it, it never goes away, and if you hit Update All, you then inadvertently update the app, which for what ever reason, you did not want to update at that time. There should be a go away button and an ask me in a week, or a month, or never button!

I never would have updated to IOS7 if in the details list it mentioned that it was going to do away with those pesky chapters-thingy that old-world books had for so long. And speaking of so long.... that your playback book length indicator would now (in a long book) be, say, 34 hours in length with no hope fo scrubbing to an accurate location when you want to.

I have the same version.

Select all the audiobook files then press [cmd + i] there you can alter the audiobook settings.

In the info tab you see on the right side the Track and Disk check boxes.

You need to check these and leave them blank (even if they are already blank).

If you did it correctly you will see the files in the right order in your audiobook section of iTunes
