iOS 7 and Audiobook Chapters

iOS 7 seems to have removed the ability to view individual audiobook chapters in the music app. It has also replaced the chapter length with the length of the entire book in the time scrubber. When tapping the top right-hand corner to access the list of chapters, now it only shows one file for the whole book, whereas before it listed all the chapters, just like it lists all the songs in an album. This change applies to my own audiobooks created using the Mac Audiobook Builder app and to Audible downloads. I haven't tried it on an iTunes purchased audiobook.

If I manage to lose my place, scrubbing (even using quarter-speed or fine) through a 30+ hour audiobook is...let's be polite and say "challenging." I really liked knowing where I was in a chapter, being able to see how much time was left, being able to view the list of chapters, etc. My hope is I'm just missing something here and some iOS 7 wizard can show me how to correct this. But I suspect Apple's just updated the app.

Just tried sending Apple some feedback, since that is the only way to get some traction on the issue. But I noticed that under feedback for iOS apps there is no "music" app listed. Apparently Apple doesn't want any feedback for that specifically. After chatting with a support agent, they suggested sending the feedback under the "iBooks" app since that was the closest option. Sure . . . whatever! I haven't listened to an audiobook in months because it's so frustrating.

J-Lew, I agree with you completely on the "squeaky wheel" principle.

But I also believe in a closely-related principle: The louder the squeak, and the more people who hear it, the faster the wheel will get oiled!

I don't know how many people are reached by that feedback webpage, but I have reason to believe it's a relatively small number. From the beginning of this thread, people have been getting urged to report the bug to the feedback webpage. Yet there have been many testimonials within this thread that when someone managed to speak to someone within Apple, the people they spoke to had never heard of this issue. In short: not too many people are hearing that particular squeak.

Magazines such as Macworld get read by a relatively large number of people. I can't tell you the numbers off hand, but compared to the approach you suggest, it's a lot of people. I continue to believe that if ten or twenty letters to the editor could get someone's attention within that magazine, or better yet several mac-centric magazines, to the point where a few editors decided to report the issue even briefly, then thousands or even hundreds of thousands of people could easily become aware of this issue, including plenty of people who actually work at Apple. Maybe the fellow who took out our audiobook chapter support would get demoted, or maybe he'd just be asked to put it back, but either way a bit of peer pressure could be a helpful thing.

I have to disagree with you where you say that the feedback page is "the only way" to get this issue known within Apple. I continue to believe that lots of people generating both types of squeaks, through regular feedback reporting and also through letters to the media, will surely be heard by more ears than squeaking only through the feedback page.

I would like to chime in as well. While I appreciate some of the new features of iOS 7, i use the audobook function quite a bit and have stared blankly at the screen in dismay when I press the audiobook segment looking for the chapter that I'm on.

And after 7 versions of the os .. the phone app still won't let you sort recents by contact. Just thought I'd throw that in ..

I want my chapters back.

This discussion has been going on for some time. Yes, I would very much like a solution to our problem.

However, Apple has never acknowledged that there is one.

At this stage, Apple must know this glitch. But, Apple chooses to ignore it.

Probably will never. No matter how many complaints are posted here.

Same happened with battery life on lap tops and apple os.

I have now give up on both

Did the actual names of the chapters used to appear in the chapter list (and not just the chapter numbers)? When I found out I couldn't even get a simple chapter list with the iPhone's Music app, I switched to Audible and I've had no problems. I've purchased several books from there and haven't looked back. I occasionally look back at this thread and saw that screenshot of Apple's old chapter list . In Audible, none of my audiobooks' chapter lists have the actual names of the chapters in text. It only has the chapter numbers. Does anyone know if Audible is supposed to show chapter names (in addition to the numbers)? Or is there a setting or something I have to configure? Or is Audible just not capable of that? I can see why so many people are upset, that'd be a great feature to have - to see the actual chapter names in addition to the numbers.
