This was fixed on my phone just by opening and closing the Calendar app.

Exactly. Which leads to numerous posts of "Oh I did this, and it fixed it." What ever you did, sorry, it did not fix it for long.

I did the tech support thing. Apple's replacing my phone with a new one, They were so quick about it, I suspect this is a hardware issue, (wear and tear on the docking port and/or headphone jack) not something they can patch with software.

Funniest thing: Once tech support was done, and the return box has been shipped. I have perfect sound. No failures in 3 hours so far.

I don't think I install any soundcloud in my phone. I tried plug in and plug out of my cable charges, my headphones, all the stuff mentioned above. It is still not working. Is it a hardware problem or a software problem? I hope the apple team can solve this problem immediately. I cannot afford to buy a new iphone just because my current phone is self-mute.😠😢😟

I know some people have had luck with cleaning their phone but I am sure the majority of people are have this issue due to a software problem. I had the final ios7 beta running fine with no sound issues for the last few weeks on my iphone 4s. I updated to the final version 2days ago and haven't had sound since. I tried may things from the simple things listed on this forum to downgrading back to 6.1.3 (while it was available) but the sound issue was persistent. I'm now back to the latest ios7 and will be visiting the apple store tomorrow since the apple tech support that i talked to for an hour today had no luck.

I'll let you know if they come up with anything.

Thanks guys for the help. I tried the trick with the charger, headphones etc. but didn't work for me... None of the suggestions directly worked(!)... But as a variation on a theme I have a set of speakers with docking station so sounded like it was worth a try trying that. Docked it, let it play for a few seconds, unplugged it and hey presto: problem fixed!!

It really shouldn't be this difficult... But thanks for the assistance!

I have been in contact with two people at Apple tech support. I have wifi at work, but work midnight to 8 in the morning. The second lady I have been in contact with has been working with me through email because I don't have an extra phone to call her on (my husband has been hunting this weekend and works different hours than I do). Hopefully she can walk me through some steps to fix my problem. I refuse to pay extra to have someone look at my phone, because I was planning on getting 3 new iPhones (2 upgrades and a new line) in May. If they can't help me without it costing me more money, then I guess we will just be going to cheap flip phones. I do love my iPhone, well when it was working correctly. But because of this whole fiasco, it cost me $400 in lost wages this weekend because I didn't receive the phone calls or didn't hear my notifications for texts.

I had this same problem... sound would work through earphones, but not through speaker when trying to listen to music or watch videos. I fixed it (after hours of research) by going to the App Store and downloading the free App "AirPlay". It actually comes up on my phone as "QuickPlay". It asks for a movie and asks to connect to pictures- I chose "not allow". I can play my music on phone speakers just fine now. I hope this helps everyone.

I've been fighting with my fathers newly updated 4s for the past hour, reading all these discussion boards, chatting with apple..still nothing. He was having the exact same issues listed, greyed out sound bar, no allowance in using side sound buttons, etc. I'm not sure how permanent this solution is since this fix literally just happened. Using my apple tv I mirrored his phone with some random youtube video, worked perfectly. But one thing I noticed is when I went to switch it back to iphone, instead of saying 'iphone' and 'apple tv', it gave the option of 'apple tv' and 'dock connector'. I'm familiar with the dock connector setting since I use one in my car. Thinking this through, I figured why not try and plug it into an actual dock and uplug and see what happens. And there it was, sound was back, slider bar was no longer greyed and everything worked perfectly. So for some reason it's recognizing that it's connected to some invisible dock, try connecting and unconnecting and see what happens. Hope this helps!

I had originally wrote updating the apps would solve the issue... Well it worked for me for a period, but it has now went back to no sound.

I fail to see after reading the posts how apple can say it is a hardware issue when so many people have been affected by this. If this ios7 issue isn't sorted soon (which clearly this issue is related to) I guess will have to change phones entirely. Shame like but doesn't seem apple want to help!

Cleaning dock connector help to me also. I recommend to everyone who have problems shake with connector during charging and watch if volume bar appear. If yes then clean your dock connector with brush and alcohol, or ask your nearest certified Apple service for it.

Is strange that this problem comes with iOS7, but looks like hardware problem. Probably iOS7 is more sensitive for detection if your phone is in dock. I think dirt, corrosion, may be non accuracy after fall on the ground is behind this problem. Hopefully Apple will identify it and go to us with some official help.
