Received error 4005 while attempting to update to iOS7, and now my phone is stuck on the "Connect to iTunes" screen.

I was trying to update to iOS7 and received error 4005 after it was "waiting for iPhone". Since then (that was approximately 3 hours ago as of 7:30MST), my phone has been stuck on the connect to iTunes screen. iTunes is no longer recognizing the device, even though it is plugged in to my computer. I have tried turning it off, but it automatically turns itself back on and returns to the "iTunes" screen. I tried entering DFU mode, and the screen turned black, but I never received the popup in iTunes about my device being in recovery mode. At this point I don't even care about getting iOS7, I just need my phone to function again. Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1.4

Same error code here. After having problems with the slowness of a new camera connection kit SD card reader, I gave up and restored my iPad 3 64Gb Wi-Fi It got stuck after my restore and ended up in restore mode. iTunes on Win8 didn't even recognise the device anymore, so I installed a new iTunes on an old Win7 machine and after many stuttering moments, and a failed attempt with "unknown error (4005)" it eventually applied the update.

Question is, do I restore the backup and will the slow SD card reader problem reappear?

I've experienced the same this morning when i tried to update to iOS7. Got an error 4005 and I tried to recover and restore using another computer as suggested, sadly it still did not work. There's always an error notice every time the restore is about to be finished. First, the iphone cannot be restored because the device cannot be found, now it's because of an unknown error (3004) . I probably tried to restore it more than 15times already. My phone still has the itunes logo and cable on it. Apple, help please! This is so frustrating!!!

No, I will not "give them a break", and F-k the "MacGod". As the richest computer company on the planet, they could make software that works, esp considering what they charge for their phones.


iTunes is biggest PoS software I have ever had the misfortune to have to use, and I don't care that it's free. I would gladly pay for software that would actually manage my iPhone.


I, like most posters, got the famous 4005 error when trying to upgrade iOS. This is the third time I have had to "reset to factory defaults" then hope it restores, when trying to upgrade iOS. It did not, and I have to start all over, again.


I'm done. As soon as I'm able, I'm getting rid of this iPhone and iTunes crap.

I had the same problem today.I resolved it by change the usb driver. Maybe my method will work for you too.

btw, I worked it out in windows7 OS system.


Open the device manager, look up if "USB Composite Device" exists, double click it and change the driver.

You should change the driver by manually selecting the driver path, which should be something like C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers

select the device driver of Apple Mobile Device, if that is not shown on the screen, uncheck compatible device option.


The above operation maybe required several times, just repeat the change driver operation. The device maybe change to something like apple ipad, just change the driver.

Based on the advice above I managed to get mine working by using a laptop with a different version of windows to the pc where the problem happened. It's taken me hours and may have cost me work while my phone wasn't working. I think the way apple have handled this issue is a disgrace. I assume it doesn't happen on macs so the apple groupies won't experience this problem and the company won't rush to fix it but for me this is the last straw after numerous problems which I put down to high handed customer relations. I will never buy another apple product again.

my iphone 5s got the same problem: error 4005 and it turn black with the error say "waiting for the iphone". I tried all the helps such as reinstalling itune, repairing Apple Mobile Device Support but they didn't work. I've been using Laptop Sony Vaio and OS 8.0. and used USB on my right hand side then I just switched the iphone USB to the left hand side then it's all done! the error is because of the USB PLUG! Sounds silly but it works!

I managed to get past the error 4005 on my Win 7 PC while updating my ipad 2 mini to iOS 8.4 by following these quick steps.

(specially line #2)

1. On iTunes go to help and run diagnostics (follow steps)

2.On Windows - Go to your start icon/control panel/programs and features/find itunes/select repair.


Let it do its thing and once itunes has restarted, try the restore again.
