Q: My ipad VIDEOS app doesn't show the movie Names with IOS 7

I just upgraded to IOS 7.  The Apple VIDEOS app no longer displays the file name for videos that don't have album art.  I have to tap on each video screen shot (which is typically meaningless) to bring up the info/play screen to see the movie's "Name".  Under IOS 6.1.4 (and prior versions) the VIDEOS app displayed the .mp4 file name underneath all videos without album art.

Is there an option to set to get the "Name" displayed on the VIDEOS main screen, or get a LIST view rather than an icon view, using IOS 7? (I have not found one)

Since most of my movies do not have album art this makes the VIDEOS app virtually useless.

You can tap the video to get the name, but I agree. A quick name reference would be nice. I'd also like to be able to tell if I've watched it or not. The feature has been completely removed!

I have discovered a rough/complex bypass.  If you plug in your iPad, bring up iTunes, do a GET INFO on a movie on the iPad and add a DESCRIPTION (see the Video tab), the screen-shot icon will be replaced by a large gray box with the movie name in the middle. Note, this only works if you modify the movie on the iPad from iTunes.  If you change the DESCRIPTION of the movie on your PC then download it to the iPad you just get the screen-shot icon with no text.

Again, we are probably dealing with either an IOS7 bug or a new feature with unintended consequences.  Either way it is a pain.

I read somewhere else (sorry, lost the link) that in iTunes, you can also change the type from 'Movie' to 'Home Video' and it will then show up with text.  I haven't tried it yet...

Yes, you can use iTunes to change the video's 'Media Kind' from 'Movie' to 'Home Video'.  The VIDEOS app will now give you three options at the top:

    - Movies

    - Home Videos

    - Shared

When you tap HOME VIDEOS you will now see the icon with the title underneath.  If you made the change directly on your iPad you get a gray box icon instead of the screen-shot. If you made the change on your PC and downloaded you get the screen-shot icon.

    To change the 'Media Kind':

    - through iTunes right-click the movie

    - click GET INFO

    - click the OPTIONS tab

    - use the MEDIA KIND drop down box to select HOME VIDEO

    - click OK

What a PITA.  I don't know why we are being forced to differentiate between "Movies" and "Home Movies".  I personally don't care if they are mixed on the same screen.

Unfortunately, I have dozens of movies that I now need to change the type to 'HOME VIDEOS', just so I can get the text to appear under the icon.  Not a good feature!

Note that the above does not completely solve the problem.

If you are using iTunes Sharing you are back to the original problem.  When you open a shared library it displays all the 'Movies' and 'Home Videos' together and none have a 'Name' caption below the icon.  So all the 'Home Videos' are back to being meaningless screen-shots that you have to tap to find out what movie they are.

The simple solution would be for Apple to just restore the 'Name' caption for all video files without album art in all VIDEOS app displays ... easy peasy!

    sullyinia's fix worked for me.

Changing types to Home Video worked.

I have a dozen or a bit more videos that are all about one subject (High Altitude Ballooning). It was driving me crazy seeing a bunch of thumbnails all of large helium balloons getting prepped for flight. I really needed the title to help me pick the correct video to airplay to our projector.

OK, I gave up.  You just can't fight city hall.

After messing with changing from 'Movie' to 'Home Video' I just said screw it.  I just finished doing the following for my 64 'Home Video' movies:

    - I did a Google image search on <movie name> poster

    - I clicked on the thumbnail to bring up the image

    - I did a right-click SAVE IMAGE AS

    - I then did a GET INFO on the movie through iTunes

    - I clicked on the ARTWORK tab

    - I added the image I just found as the the artwork

    - I change the MEDIA KIND back to MOVIE

    - I then recopied the movies I keep on my iPad (about 10) from the PC

No more problems now either with viewing the local or Shared movie lists from my iPad. As I add new movies I will make sure to manually add the artwork.  What a PITA.

Hopefully Apple will get this fixed. This movie UI painfulness (that wasn't even a problem on IOS 6.x) is something worthy of Microsoft.

Wow! I have just as many "home videos" as you do and am not looking forward to going through the same steps you did! You're right, this is a PITA. I can't believe this is intended functionality.

I was shocked when I saw the filenames missing on videos. Wow. Genius.
