I've updated my iPhone 4 and my mac's iTunes - everything syncs fine except for music. I've tried reboots etc to no avail.
I've tried to sync by playlist, artist, album and genre separately and nothing works with the status bar stuck on "Step 4 of 4" on the preparing bar.

All the Apple servers are massively overloaded.
If you still have the problem in a day or so, report back.
Why would Apple servers affect me syncing my music locally from mac to iPhone when both have been succesffully updated?
I thought you were syncing via iCloud, sorry about that.
No problem. Yeah, I'm suffering from syncing from my local library in iTunes - it just seems to freeze at the final sync step with "Waiting for changes to be applied"
I'm having the same issue. All my music from 'the cloud' is available to play from my phone, but all my downloaded music is blank with a square button next to it, although itunes seems to say that everything is complete, and i have 30gb free on my phone, can't get my music to play!!! Ok guys I've solved it!
In the summary tab of the iPhone deselect everything apart from Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected
I had "Sync only checked songs and videos" checked and by unchecking this I was able to sync my music just as normal
Have you tried my solution as below? I reckon that should sort it!
same here, im facing this issue with my iPhone4s, it kept syncing for 1.5 hours on step 5 aka waiting for changes to be applied.
This is not a solution for someone who has 10,000 songs.
I am having same problem where its trying to sync and when it gets to stage 5 it says canceling.....

This didn't work for me. I have some playlists selected and some artists. I can sync the playlists but not the artists (whereas before the upgrade I could sync both via the 'sync selected...' option on the music tab. I have checked and unchecked the 'sync selected...' option on the summary tab, but it has no effect. Any clues? (I just updated both iTunes and IOS). Thanks for any advice.
I've got the same problems with my ipod 5th Gen syncing music locally between Mac mini running iTunes 11.1 on OS10.8.5 I've tried all of the above sugestions & it still gets stuck on the final stage.
I have the same issue that you have now. I tried many ways that others posted online. No luck. Is this apple's iOS 7 bug with iPhone 4? I am really frustrating now!
