iOS 7 - 3G toggle for iPhone 5

Hi,

I have a problem with my iPhone 5 - locked on Orange Romania.

Since the last iOS update (6 to 7) - I cannot switch off the 3G connection anymore. Instead, I have a 4G toggle that is completely useless - because 4G in my area is pure fiction.

My problem with the 3G toggle is that I really need it! In my office I have one bar for the 3G signal and I have many dropped calls.

First question: can I have my 3G toggle back?

Second question: who decides if the 3G toggle is available or not in the carrier bundle, Apple or the carrier itself?

Thank you!

PS: My carrier says that Apple decides what is available in the carrier bundle.

Hello,

I have the same problem like you with an iphone 5s, everything i tried to get my 3g toggle back was in vain. Finally I spoke with a friend who knows this stuff and told me that to blame for thhis missing toggle is the carrier i'm on... Some carriers like vodafone for example forced on us the 4g toggle because they want to get rid pf 2g llatform and take the networking to the next level... Whch in my opinion is a good thing (evolving), the sad part is that they have poor coverege. So, i think the best choice for you is to complain to your carrier and see what they say.

Have a nice day

i would suggest to download 7.0.4 firmware and restore your phone totally. But the backup you will be restoring with, must have previously been taken with cellular data off. After restoring the firmware don't restore the backup first, insert the sim and see if the toggle is back. Because if you miss the toggle after restoring the backup then it means that the updated carrier file is in backup.

Other i could suggest is that you can restore your backup on an older idevice like 3gs or i4, then make a backup from that older phone and then restore that backup to your new device. All above are untested but trying may help to come out from this pathetic problem.

Is exactly what I have done. And without never restore the backup. As I said I ever restored as new phone but nothing changed. The carrier is still at last update...I don't know how to completly restore the iphone without downgrade the iOs but i think it's illegal so...The iPhone is little useless now...the battery works for half day...after that is just a 700$ paperweight..

I'm a Vodafone user too.But when I called them they said that the 2G it will be active for at least 4 or 5 years in my country so if I have a service I want to use it! And it's Apple foult to leave to operators the decision to show this toggle. However I have solved the problem.Just ordered three Nexus 5 for me and my friends.Other will follow us.If I (we) spent so much money for a device I expect to be able to use it for at least 1 day and not 6/7 hours because a stupid toggle.

Tnx to all who have answered and tried to help! You are all awesome 😉 And good luck to others...if you can't solve the problem change device like me!

Don't give up yet, I have been on many forums around this tiny tech world and trust me, this is not just an iPhone issue. It is happening with many different phones/tablets/carriers. It's the price we pay for fast technology/slow science. All the money goes to tech industries and tech people because industry aim is to sell as fast as it can be and the tech people are fast but not always wise! Scientific research gets nothing, unless they compromise with industries.

Back to the iPhone.... disable all toggles under "use cellular data for" on the bottom of the "cellular" screen but DON'T disable the cellular data toggle (the first one on the "cellular" screen) and DON'T disable the 4G toggle (second one). Backup, restore to factory settings, restore from backup and DON'T accept any carrier settings updates.

I sincerely hope this works for you all, but meanwhile, contact your carrier and ask them to "reset" your phone account, tell them you can't make any phone calls (even if this is not true). That should solve the problem.

By the way, my carrier updated to 4G and then a new update returned to 3G, it's a mess!

Apple has no advisor or tech reading this forum, so forget about an immediate solution, maybe a future iOS update with as many toggles as the screen can accomodate!

Hope apple is listening atleast in their own thread...

No, probably not. If you want Apple to know how you feel, use the Feedback page:

http://www.apple.com/feedback

Be aware, though, that this is really a carrier decision.

I am pretty sure that feedback page is not going to help. I have tried before, (Not this issue in particular) but was never even responded. Now of we see the above problem, don't you think Apple is more concerned about the carrier's service than to the customers they are selling to. As explained by iPat11, it seems that Apple is being controlled by the carriers.

I really don't understand what would apple have lost if they could have provided an extra toggle for 3G??

I think carriers might have asked Apple for a provision of 4G or LTE toggle but not to remove the 3G.

Nevertheless, this network inefficiency will help both carrier and Apple to lose their customers for sure.

Of course they don't respond. It's a feedback link. They even tell you they won't respond. If enough people respond, it is possible they may change things (not this particular thing as this is a carrier issue, really).

Yeah thanx for the info, but FYI even the carrier is quoting me that this has to be done by Apple.

This issue was escalated way back, and there has been many compliants and feedbacks reported to Apple. ios 6 gave the glimpse of such issue for the fist time, but Apple came back with the toggle in further versions. As you see they are back again to annoy people in coalition with carriers. Also to an extent it is acceptable for those who have purchased iPhone on contract, but why the same thing is happening with factory unlocked phones those who were bought directly from Apple Store? There must be no carrier interference.

BTW are you an employee?

Sadly, as I am not independently wealthy, I am someone's employee. However, neither I nor anyone else posting in this thread is an Apple employee. This is a user-to-user technical support forum. Apple's participation is minimal. The Hosts, identified by purple apple avatars, rarely post outside the Using Apple Communities forums. Their job is to maintain decorum and keep the forums running smoothly. They don't answer techncial support questions. There are also Community Specialists. They are identified by title. They answer a fairly limitied subset of questions that can easily be answered by referring the poster to a KB article and which have gone unaswered for 24 hours.
