Britt:

Love your quote here on skeumorphisms:

There isn't any real depth to ios 7. Nor is there any frosted glass. Fake frosted glass is just as

dumb as fake yellow note pads.

The staunch defenders of killing skeumorphisms miss the point that a GUI was created because it is easier for people to use because of its skeumorphic properties. (OK, I fully understand some people feel fake leather is cheesy. In the name of throwing out cheesy, Apple threw the baby out with the bath water and eliminated important elements like buttons. Glad they are back with 7.1.1.)

If you are a true skeumorphism hater, we all need to go back to green screens. Otherwise, it should be a discussion on what is the "right" level of realism in the UI. In my opinion IOS 7 remains a step backward from where IOS 6 was.

I'm glad somebody else got it. THe "Big Lie" about ios 7 was that they got rid of skeuomorphism. No they didn't. They just replaced Steve Jobs and Scott Forstall take on skeuomorphism with Jony Ives (or is it Android and Windows Phones) version of it. Jony and Tim preached it, and the true believers bought it.

However, in their rush to change, they got away from many of the features that made ios work so well. Don't believe me? Apple does. Thats why they introduced change after change in pretty well every upgrade of ios 7 to make it clearer and more legible. If there really wasn't an issue, except for the people we always hear slagged on this forum for being "unable to handle change" or some such rubbish, then why bother with all the upgrades and revisions?

Do you really know what skeumorphism is? It isn't "frosted glass" whatever that was supposed to mean.

I do agee that they used a broad brush to wipe out everything that was skeumorphic, Forstall (who really was the one who extended it, not so much Mr. Jobs) was out, everything goes and went with a Jony Ives design (and he was hired by Steve Jobs). He did not use skeumorphism at all, just like Android doesn't use a lot of it, Windows uses none of it. If you look at the interfaces of a lot of computer controlled devices (and publications) they have also gone with 2D cleaner designs. More white space makes it easier to read and aside from that it cleared out some bloat in the OS code.

Essentially, as some in Apple have said, iOS 7 was back to square one and starting over. There will be lots of tweaks to it, just like there was from iPhone OS 1 to iOS 6.1.6.

iOS 7 will keep evolving but I doubt we will see the 3D icons or skeumorphism again.
