The only workaround for now is by using Siri. Tell her to shuffle alternative or whatever genre you want and it seems to work.

Found this on another forum:

I was having this same problem and I don't even have Siri. But I found a solution.

Go into Songs, pull down the search bar and enter the Genre you want. Scroll down the search results until you reach the Genre entry. Selecting that takes you to a list of all the songs in the Genre.

Pull down again and a Shuffle option is revealed above the song list. Select that and it will shuffle all the songs in the Genre.

The work around of manually typing in the genre name into the search box only partially works, because I am missing whole albums within that genre. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? They are listed under iTunes in my computer for that genre, so I'm not sure why they wouldn't show up on the iPhone genre. I know that they are uploaded to the iPhone because they show up when I manually type in the name of the album or artist. What gives?

Or songs within the same album with slightly different genre names. For example "Rock" vs "rock," or a misspelling like "Electronic" vs "Elevtronic"...or something like that. I've had that happen when I fat finger something in the MP3 Info...

As for the guys that get on here all pi$$ed off about this and threaten to switch to Android, etc...seriously, if a small bug like this is going to set you off that much, by all means, switch to Android...since their OS is COMPLETELY free of bugz...LOL! Spouting off here and badmouthing Apple isn't going to win any of us any favors!

...I have owned both iPhones and Android phones, and by far iOS is MUCH cleaner. There are ALWAYS bugs in an a major software revision...with ANY software. I was hesitant to upgrade to iOS7.0 because I expected bugs, but elected to upgrade anyway and just deal with the bugs until they got them fixed, which Apple is usually pretty good about getting fixed within a month or two. Obviously security takes a higher priority than the shuffle feature disappearing in the music player, so it's going to take longer to correct that bug. Apple just came out with iOS 7.02 the other day, which fixed a bunch of security issues, so hopefully they will start getting to correcting some of the functional bugs soon.

Ok RyanGibson77, you're probably right: every new software has its bugs and of course security issues have priority. But hey, to shuffle music in a genre is not really something... special. It is completely basic! If one of the richest/most powerfull IT-company is not able to test a new release properly there is something wrong. And even if I am not a software specialist I think that Apple clearly has to check if all basic requirements of the software have been maintained in the release. And yes, Apple should have enough ressources to check the realization of such basic requirements. How is it possible that several dozen (probably more) people are searching the internet for a solution only a few hours after the relaese...? Hohoho, we are veeeeeeery special tester, perhaps we are even sent by apple's competitor just to seek completly improbale bugs, in order to produce bad press... :-) ??

Apple could at least answer on this forum or why all this mistery..? Again, it's not that we are talking about a small company which has no money to respond to its customers on the company's own website (!)...

I agree on what you wrote about the pi$$ed soon-android-user, but on the other hand, I am amazed what customers like you are willing to accept. And apparently you find this completely normal.

First Apple invented the ipod, then it was combined to more or less existing technology and called iphone: this feature IS BASIC!

Ok, now that we can localize our position with GPS and send audiofiles that are stored in our linked dropbox account: let's shuffle in genre with a workaround! :-)

and perhaps somebody is willing to adapt:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuffle_play

"Media devices and players can usually shuffle more than just albums: they can also shuffle all of an Artists Music, all of the music in a certain genre, and even all songs on the device. However, like it ist totally normal, Apple forgot parts of this feature in its ios7. But there's no reason to worry, it works more or less with a complicated workaround that can be found on the internet through the searchengine of Apples' competitors." :-))

...I'm not saying it's right, nor is it good business practice to miss a bug like this. I'm just saying that some people just need to lighten up a bit. 😮

...I agree though that Apple should have forum admins or tech support people of some sort, that could answer our plea for help, and respond with a status of the bug fix. That would be a nice touch...not just left hanging, wondering if they even know the bug exists yet because nobody at Apple is actually reading the Apple Forums...it's a lot easier to be patient if you at least know someone is working on a solution! 😉

I too was having this issue however I may have found a way to work around this once simple option. I've found this to work on my 64Gb 3rd gen iPad. Upon opening iTunes select genre located on the lower section, select your genre and choose to play any that read 1 album, 1 song. After selecting to play, on the upper right hand side you will see three options of which the one farthest to the right is shuffle, touch until it reads shuffle all. Return into your selected genre by tapping back, located on the upper left of screen<(whatever genre selected). Once there simply tap to play next song >> and you'll notice it displays no song content cause of our selection earlier ( 1 album, 1 song) then all you have to do is simply press play and it will shuffle all within a genre. I hope this works for you until Apple can make this option simple again?
