Problem with iOS 7 and smtp Gmail

Hi everyone,

I chose in the past for a Gmail account because it supported push mails on the iPhone through Exchange.

When Google stopped the push mails through Exchange, I found a work around to keep using my gmail address on my iPhone :

  • I created an iCloud email address, to have push mails
  • I set a rule in my Gmail that automatically forwarded all incoming mails to my iCloud email address
  • I changed the outgoing server of my iCloud address, using smtp.gmail.com so that all outgoing mails of my iCould account was using my Gmail address

It was a bit complicated to set up, but at the end it worked fine and it was transparent for my contacts: they were sending en receiving mails from my Gmail address.

It all worked until... iOS 7. With iOS 6.1.4, it was OK, but since the latest upgrade to iOS 7 my outgoing mails are coming from my iCould and not my Gmail account anymore. The iCloud SMTP server is set as "inactive" and the smtp.gmail.com is set as "active", however emails are sent from my iCloud address...

I don't get it. My iPad is still in 6.1.3 with the same settings as my iPhone 5 in iOS 7: my iPad reacts as it should be, my iPhone doesn't.

Is it an identified bug in iOS 7, is it a problem at Gmail's side?

Thanks for your feedback,

Chris

I also upgraded my iPad from 6.1.3 to iOS 7, and the same problem occured.

I sent an email before the upgrade: it was using the Gmail SMTP.

I sent an email after the upgrade, without changing anything to the settings: it was using the iCould SMTP, while it's clearly indicated that the outgoing server is the Gmail one...

I hope iOS 7.0.1 will fix this bug

I don't use the roundabout iCloud method, though if this worked that'd be a great idea for push email. But with my GMail account set up the smtp.gmail.com server isn't working for both my iPhone and iPad under iOS 7. Tried deleting and re-adding the account with no luck. I don't know how much Apple or Google are to blame (yes, iOS 7 caused this, but Google's servers could be at fault not accepting iOS 7 requests for some reason), but hopefully this gets fixed soon as it puts a real damper on doing email on my mobile devices. I do think that we have established that this isn't something any actions of ours can fix.

+1 from me as well

As described before, neither my iPhone 4S nor iPad 2 sends mail through Gmail SMTP server after upgrading to iOS 7. When sending with iOS 6, I was able to see my sent messages in Sent folder of Gmail. Since iOS upgrade, there are none new. This means in my eyes that Apple ignores the settings (disabled primary iCloud SMTP server, enabled Gmail server) and nothing is sent to Gmail SMTP.

I just upgraded two iPhones to an iPhone 5s and a 5c. On both devices the exchange accounts for gmail stopped working after restoring from iCloud back-up. I deleted the accounts and set up again as exchange, but no-go.

Everything was fine under iOS 7 on the previous phones (iPhone 4S & 5).

What gives?

Google stopped supporting Exchange for free accounts as of 30 January 2013. Any phones that still had it set up can continue to use it (I do on my iPhone). You won't be able to set it up on any new devices (I couldn't set it up on my iPad after it was swapped out under warranty).

You can either set up Gmail as an IMAP account or use the Gmail app

Best of luck.
