Why doesn't Flash Player work on OS X 10.7.5?

I have not been able to view a video or watch live newscasts since I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion 10.7.5. I have the latest download of Flash Player now (11.8.800.168) insstalled now.

I go to the Flash Player site and they say, "Flash Player 10.3.183.5 to get the best experience with Mac OS X Lion", but then I cannot find a place to download that version. Also I am not sure how secure that version is.

I have a MacBook Pro Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and Flash Player 11.8.800.something and it works well to pull up and watch news videos.

I have struggled with this for many months and just cannot get the problem resolved. I would appreciate any help.

I just want to add that I have CS4 and I think there is a Flash of some kind in that program. I don't know if it would cause a problem and I don't know if it is safe to delete it. And I can't imagine why FlashPlayer would play some video for me but not other videos of other sites if the CS4 were a problem. But thought it would be worth mentioning.

I tried your problematic websites and had no difficulty with them. Since I have CS4 installed too, it doesn't seem to be the problem.

"Block pop-up windows" has always been off, but I have GlimmerBlocker installed. Is that a problem?

Is GlimmerBlocker turned on? Increasingly, the business model of websites it to capture your information via cookies and/or present advertising, and the correct operation of the website may be contingent upon you letting them do either or both. I use Ghostery, which blocks tracking cookies, and I've found some websites simply won't work unless I temporarily allow the website to set at least some cookies, which I turn on, one by one. Very likely, it's the same for advertising.

Plug-in version 11.5.502.146 is installed. I can do ever thing on the fox web site with 10.7.5 and taht older flash version. now the videos do not play if you click on a link on the main home page. but if you move to the page if the list of videos they play from there.

live tv takes awhile to get started. very slow compared to other sites I vist. there faq says flash 11.2 is all taht is required.

it appears to be more a usability issue with this web site, compared to others.

I went to the page that focuses on just videos, and I went to a section that is a subtitle to FoxNews and tried videos on both sites with no luck. I don't know if that was what you meant for me to try.

I found a place on FoxNews that says "Contact Us" with an email. I think I will try that although I tried to write once before several years ago and never did get an answer so I don't have much confidence they will answer on this kind of issue.

I also think that I will go through all the suggestions that have already been listed on this question again. Try to line them up in a logical way and do the whole delete/uninstall, reinstall, get permissions, etc once again and see if it works.

Thankyou VA2flsun for your outreach.

The confusing thing with me is that Flash works on a couple of stations and with YouTube. I just cannot figure out why Flash would work on some websites and not others.

I do still have two instances of WD My Book in my Title Bar and cannot get rid of one of them. Info with a right click is identical. I have no idea if that is interfering with my use of Flash.

I am in shellshock. I finally broke through and was able to watch video on FoxNews, WSJ, and CBS, which were web sites I had been unable to watch.

I had been to Adobe Support before but tried again. The following URL helped. It seems to be for online games.

http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/troubleshoot-games-video-audio-flash.html

I skipped the information on 'clear cache' because steps don't work on my Safari and Foxfire browsers. I had already reset Safari anyway and I think that clears the cache.

I did not take my computer off its wireless connection. If instructions were focused on game playing, I ignored them.

I had already done the upgrades so I skipped all that.

At the instructions on "Settings Manager " for Flash Player, I paid close attention. I didn't realize you needed to make your settings and permissions on the Adobe website (or through this embedded settings manager) and I had been checking my permissions in the Flash Program in my computer system preferences.

The steps that I took and that helped me were these:

1. Control Click (Right Click) on any content that is displayed in Flash Player. For me it was the black video screen.

2. Select Global Settings. The Settings Manager Help Page appears.

3. I checked:

"allow third party Flash content to store data on your computer".

"Ask me when a site wants to use the camera or microphone (recommended)."

4. I gave them 1 MB of storage. I tried 100 KB but that did not allow the videos to play.

I enjoyed watching videos I had previously not been able to watch.

I have since gone back and changed the Settings Manager to "Ask me before allowing new sites to save information on this computer". I did this on my computer systems preferences so it may not mean anyting. I then clicked on 'LOCAL STORAGE SETTINGS BY SITE' and selected the sites I wanted to give a permanent permission and checked "Allow" for them.

Thank you to all those who supported me and tried to help me through this extremely frustrating time.

SCSilverfox-

Thank you thank you thank you!

And thank you to everyone else who contributed to this thread.. I learned a lot from all of your suggestions here.

My issue was this: CWTV website videos had worked fine up until a couple of months ago.. that is, up until I had updated Flash Player v.11 to v.12. After that, I could not view videos on CWTV anymore. I hadn't changed any of the FP settings from the previous version of FP. YouTube and Hula.com videos worked just fine after updating to FP12, so I had taken this as confirmation that FP settings were still good.. and as I'd set them in FP11.

(I had even tried uninstalling FP12 so that I could reinstall FP11, but instead, got an error message upon re-installation of FP11.. I can only presume that one cannot go back to a prior FP version once a newer version of FP has been installed..?).

I do, however, want to add to your gold-key instructions.. just in case it may help someone else. I had to to access my Flash Player Global Settings differently than you had outlined here. If I Control-Click (Right-Click) on the black video screen and select "Global Settings," my Computer's 'System Preferences' window of FP displays, which does not have the options to set: 1. allow third-party Flash content to store data on your computer or 2. to set the storage amount allowed (which were both dno in making things right again).

For me to get to the Flash Player Global Settings, I had to access it through Adobe/Macromedia's website: [http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_man ager07.html]

(Note: The Settings Manager that displays in your browser window is the actual Settings Manager for your Computer's Flash Player program. Also, I'm not sure how often Adobe updates their Settings Manager weblink, but it works for now for FP12). So, from the Settings Manager via Adobe's website, I was able to change both of those settings so that CWTV now works.. Yay!

Again, thank you, SCSilverfox, for detailing your path.. and mine.. to success.

Cheers.

SCSilverfox (september 25, 2013), This was exactly what I needed. Hours of time wasted and this was the solution to watching shows online. I could not watch cbs.com on Firefox, Opera, Safari...I knew it had to be a global issue. Like Seksy1, I had to open the macromedia website. I got to that site by right clicking the black screen, which pulled up the flashplayer settings, which I had been changing to no avail. In the upper right corner, there is a blue question mark. I clicked on that, which brought up the macromedia site where the Settings Manager that displays your actual settings for your computer shows up. I followed SCSilverfox's instructions for the Settings Manager. Now I am watching cbs shows again. Thank you so very much! I cannot tell you how many websites I read to try to fix this. Thank you, thank you, thank you SCSilverfox!

Thank you for your feedback docgrna. I'm so glad you were able to get back to watching the shows you want. I know how very frustrating that was.

And Seksy1, I just received your addition. Not sure what happened; maybe lost in cyberspace. I appreciate your feedback as well and am glad you made it back to being able to watch your favorite shows.
