Why doesn't Flash Player work on OS X 10.7.5?

I have not been able to view a video or watch live newscasts since I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion 10.7.5. I have the latest download of Flash Player now (11.8.800.168) insstalled now.

I go to the Flash Player site and they say, "Flash Player 10.3.183.5 to get the best experience with Mac OS X Lion", but then I cannot find a place to download that version. Also I am not sure how secure that version is.

I have a MacBook Pro Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and Flash Player 11.8.800.something and it works well to pull up and watch news videos.

I have struggled with this for many months and just cannot get the problem resolved. I would appreciate any help.

I followed all the uninstall and install directions. Thank you for your responses. I checked to see if the install was successful, and the web page states that the install was successful and tells me I have s11.8.800.168 installed. Unfortunately, I still cannot play any of the newscast videos. I just get a black rectangular box with no audio and no video.

I had done the uninstall and install yesterday too - and many times earlier over several updates of Flash Player and have not been successful at any time since I have Lion installed. I don't know what the hang up is but it is truly frustrating.

If there is something blocking the player, I don't know where to look. I see that others have been successful.

Go to the Flash Player Help page. Do you see a movie running in step 1?

What browser are you using? Have you tried different browsers, e.g., Safari, Chrome, Firefox? If yes, does the problem persist with all browsers?

Have you rebooted your computer? Since you installed Lion, have you verified your hard disk and repaired permissions? You can do that with Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.

LulyLC,

Hi. I do see a movie running on the Flash Player page.

I am using Safari. I have not tried another browser this time but I did try Firefox a few days ago with no luck.

I did restart the computer after I uninstalled Flash Player and again after I Installed Flash Player.

Now the item about verifying my hard disk and repaired permissions is scary and completely new to me. I did not actually install Lion myself. It was installed when I took my computer to the iMac repair center to have a "recall" fixed. I did find the Disk Utility you mentioned and ran the "Verify Disk Permissions". Below is the list that the Disk Utility ran:

Permissions verification complete

Here are the directions:

If Repair Disk is unavailable, click Verify Disk. If the disk needs repairs, you'll be able to repair it fom the Recovery HD.

If you have a permissions problem with a file installed by the Mac OS X installer, click Repair Disk Permissions.

I'm not sure what to do with this.

One of the following steps should help.

1. System Preferences > Other/ Flash Player > Advanced > Delete All

Press the "Delete All" button

Install Adobe Flash Player.

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Quit Safari.

Restart computer. Relaunch Safari.

2. Enable Plug-ins

Safari > Preferences > Security

Web Content: > "Enable Plug-ins".

or

Internet Plug-ins > "Allow all other plug-ins

3. Check whether you are currently in YouTube HTML 5 trial.

http://www.youtube.com/html5

At the bottom left of the page uncheck the box beside

"You are currently in the HTML5 trial".

4. Reset Safari.

Click Safari in the menu bar.

From the drop down select "Reset Safari".

Uncheck the boxes next to all items.

Check the box next to "Remove all website data".

Click "Reset".

5. Turn off Extensions, if any.

Safari > Preferences > Extensions

Now try YouTube.

Best.

dominic 23. Thank you for your answer and the trouble you took with detailing the steps. I have some hesitancy though because I have already Uninstalled and reinstalled Flash Player, have enabled plug-ins, have checked for extensions and do not have any, have restarted my computer. I haven't done the youtube steps, but I am not having difficulty watching youtube videos. It is the videos that are available at online news sites that I can not watch, also I cannot watch any live online broadcasts and they all see to take FlashPlayer. But, again, I really appreciate your help.

Great!

I'm not sure what to do with this.

Re-launch Disk Utility. Click the button "Verify Disk" and let the test run. If the report is OK, then click the button "Repair Disk Permissions." Let it run. Most of the items in the Verify Permissions report will get repaired/corrected. Afterwards, try the newscast sites.

Consider providing a couple of urls to the sites where you experience the problem. This will allow other users to see if they experience the same problem.

BTW: dominic23 provides great suggestions to try. YouTube runs Flash unless you are running their HTML5 beta.

Sep 20, 2013 5:52 AM in response to dominic23

dominic23,

I love your easy-to-follow explicit steps. I did go through all the steps even though I have uninstalled and reinstalled Flash so many times before. I'll do anything to get this working. Not sure why Flash is so difficult.

Step 1: (Multiple steps): I had never uninstalled a program by this method before so it was an interesting exercise. I did follow all the parts of this step.

Step 2: (Internet Plug-ins > "Allow all other plug-ins ): I checked this.

Step 3: (Check whether you are currently in YouTube HTML 5 trial): Another interesting new finding. I did check this page and saw the notation that I wasn't currently enrolled in the HTML 5 trial.

Step 4: (Reset Safari "Remove all website data"): I completed this step.

Step 5: (Safari > Preferences > Extensions): I checked this and there were no extensions listed, but I clicked the "OFF" part of the ON/OFF button anyway.

I was able to watch YouTube, but I wasn't having trouble with YouTubes. It was always Web News sites that I had difficulty.

Thanks again

Sep 20, 2013 6:03 AM in response to LilyLC

Thank you for continuing to help. I have relaunched Disk Utility and followed your instructions. I have received a "Permissions repair complete" notice.

I tried to run videos on the following web sites with varied success. If there is no comment after the URL, I was not successful in running the video.

http://video.foxnews.com/

http://live.wsj.com

http://www.cnn.com

http://www.cbsnews.com --- At the CBS News site, I watched the commercial but then the screen turned black and would not show the news film.

http://www.bbc.co.uk --- Yay! This site did show the videos (I tried two)

http://www.pbs.org --- This site did not work a few days ago and does work now. Yay!

I completed all the steps from dominic23, and still no success running video on FoxNews, WSJ, or CBS.

Thank you for your patience.

Sep 21, 2013 5:47 PM in response to SCSilverfox

Since you can view videos on YouTube as well as bbc.co.uk and pbs.org then Flash Player is working.

What version of Safari are you using? Or use Software Update from the Apple menu to see if there is an update available for your computer.

Consider clearing Safari cache: Safari menu > Empty cache...

Consider clearing Safari cookies: Safari > Preferences >Privacy tab

Enable JavaScript: Safari > Preferences > Security tab

Hi LilyLC,

I have Safari 6.0.5 and I just checked for updates. iTunes had an update- again - but everything else supposedly up to date.

I have reset Safari: Safari > Reset Safari > Remove all website data. I thought that cleared the cache. I cannot find Safari menu.

I have cleared all cookies

JavaScript is enabled.

FoxNews still doesn't play video for me.

Thank you for hanging in there with me. If you can find any further tries please list them. I am gone tomorrow but will check in tomorrow evening.

Thank you so much for your efforts.

Sep 22, 2013 4:07 AM in response to SCSilverfox

I just want to add that I have CS4 and I think there is a Flash of some kind in that program. I don't know if it would cause a problem and I don't know if it is safe to delete it. And I can't imagine why FlashPlayer would play some video for me but not other videos of other sites if the CS4 were a problem. But thought it would be worth mentioning.

Why doesn't Flash Player work on OS X 10.7.5?
