How do I remove icons from Safari welcome page in iOS 7?

I have just up-graded to iOS7 and opened my Safari browser. There are four icons on the welcome screen and four links on a favourites bar. The links are to Apple, Disney, Yahoo and ESPN UK. I did not choose these links and I have no wish to use them. I have been able to hide the favourites bar but there is no obvious way to delete the icons. I have tried touching and holding them but they do not shake nor offer an 'x' for deletion like home screen icons so how do I clear away this unwanted advertising?

I have a screen shot but don't know how to upload it to this discussion board...?

Go to Bookmarks -> Favourites and then edit your Favourites.

Deleting a favourite will delete one of the icons on the Welcome page.

Adding one will add an icon to the Welcome page.

Did that help?

I have a box with an arrow, pointing up. I click on it and it gives me a choice...Bookmarks, Add To Reading List, etc. I click on Bookmarks and i get an "Add Bookmark" box with "Cancel" on one side and "Save" on the other. At the bottom of the box is "Location" and "Favorites >". When i click on Favorites I get another box that says "Choose a Folder" with Favorites and Bookmarks. Choosing either of these takes me directly back to the previous box. There is no choice to edit anything anywhere.

Hi toddott

I think you might be using the wrong side of the Safari browser to change your bookmarks. The icons at the top right of the screen are the settings icons for changing your preferences. Clicking the image which is meant to look like an open book but also looks like a butterfly, is the way to go.

Scroll back through this discussion for the link I gave to my flickr page and see the screenshots I uploaded. There are six images all in sequence showing what to click etc That might help you out.

Also Mart65 has given helpful tip as have other posters, all offering ingenious workarounds.

Hope this helps, if not come back with a follow-up and I'll try again. Don't worry, we will get there!

I've been there. Hope this makes sense......I found it by tapping to use the keyboard and found a blue "private" above the left hand side of the key board...the strip at the top of the page turned from white to black...and...then....I could go into the favourites/edit/ remove stuff that others have said. Hope it helps.....that's how I did it anyway!

Got to agree with you ref the awful appearance of IOS 7. Presentation of IOS 6 much clearer . Is terrible now.

Seems all apple geeks at apple care about what they want to do instead of taking note of the end users who are not all IT Tecchies. Seriously thinking of changing to Samsung/Galaxy now! Fed up of all these quirks each and every time they alter the IOS versions. Am NOT happy at all!!

I didn't say the appearance of iOS 7 is awful. And it doesn't really matter in the context of this discussion. My main gripe with iOS 7 is that it's design is more like a book than a user interface. Maybe even a pretty book, but that's a matter of taste. As a user interface it doesn't really seem to work, a lot of things don't make any sense and it's hard to explain to users who get lost in all the typography and tiny symbols.

Hi Lady908

I agree that iOS7 is not as reliable as iOS6. I asked Apple for help restoring iOS6 on my iPad 4. They ignored my request and sent me a message saying my question had been deleted from the forum. Apparently, Apple do not like criticism of iOS7.

I own Android tablets and phones (I am an engineer so have kit for my work) and samples of other OS like RIM Blackberry's webOS. I find that seeking solutions to bugs in those communities is supported and encouraged - not crushed by Big Brother at HQ as seems to be the case at Apple.

We all have an option to walk - and to spend our hard-earned cash elsewhere. I think Apple is complacent. That is the point at which the curve tends to turn down. Cling to Apple if you wish but I think the savvy customer knows when to move on.

I am now working on developing Firefox OS for phones and tablets. Sure it is clunky now but everyone knows that and is committed to improve the OS. Apple development once used to be as 'idealistic' and I liked that - I hope it finds its soul again.

I wont be posting on Apple's forum again. I don't like to be insulted by Apple's 'Customer Care' when I make constructive comment on a product that I paid good money for only to find it is full of bugs and has left my iPad (bought Spring 2013) unfit for purpose. Once upon a time "the customer was always right" - it is still true, as companies discover when they ignore that rule.

Tap on the Bookmark icon to the right of the URL box .A drop down menu will appear. If the drop menu is titled "Bookmarks" tap the Favorites command and then tap the Edit command on the bottom right of the menu box.

However, if you tap the Bookmark icon and the title of the drop down menu is "< Bookmark (in blue) History", tap the blue arrow to the left of the word Bookmark. Then tap on Favorites and subsecuently tap on the word "Edit in the lower right hand corner. You will now be able to tap on the red badge and delete the favorite URL
