I have the same problem, I have follow the procedure to unlock but to no avail.

I want know if any particular computer or operating system is required?

I equally want to know if I have to have i-tune in computer before it can work?

What if I don't have access to iTunes

iTunes is free. You just need to install it on a computer. Https://Apple.com/iTunes. You will not be able to restore your phone without it.
