In 3 hours of almost no activity my iPhone 5 upgraded to IOS 7 last night is now at 73%. This is a problem. It will be dead before the day is finished and I haven't even used it yet. What happened in this latest upgrade?

Background App refresh is not a new feature; it has been there since iOS 3. What is new is the ability to turn it off selectively.
Interesting - I didn't realize that. Having said that, the change I saw after turning it off was noticable - I've heard comments about the improved ability to multitask with iOS7 - it certainly *seems* as though the phone was trying to do more after the upgrade.
It probably was doing more. After an upgrade apps may need refresh dynamic content. This will mean more data usage and more energy use for a while. If this was the cause it should quiet down after a while. Also see my earlier post: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5328332?tstart=0#23046008

I have iPhone 5 upgraded to iOS 7. My standby battery consumption seems to be ok: from 100% to 97% in about 2.5 hours. When browsing on wifi, the battery goes down by 1% every 5 minutes or so (brightness is set to about 1/3 of its maximum value).
At the end of a day (yesterday), the battery was at 26% with 5.5 hours of usage and 13 hours of standby. I have a feeling that it was slighly better before the upgrade, but it might be just an illusion. Unfortunately, I did not take any measurements before upgrading.
That sounds about where it should be. 26% for 5.5 hours works out to about 8 hours of use on a charge.
