MacBook Pro (2007) 3,1 & 10.8.5 freezing

While it goes without saying, firstly if you possess one of these MacBooks (I believe the unofficial model description of these MacBooks is the "Santa Rosa" model), do yourself a HUGE favor and make a back-up before attempting to upgrade to OS X 10.8.5.

Regarding my expereinces thus far attemtping to update:

At the onset, I can attest to the fact that my MacBook Pro runs OS X 10.8.4 flawlessly. Furthermore, the Apple Service Diagnostic disc for my 2007 MacBook Pro 15'' 3,1 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz A1226 MA895LL/A reports absolutely NO Hardware issues whatsoever including the memory check. I have tried EVERYTHING in performing ALL the obvious troubleshooting (i.e. permissions repair, SMC & PRAM rest, subtracting/adding memory modules etc.).

I have also installed OS X 10.8.5 in all three (3) possible configurations (software update, combo update and the full/clean Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5 .app install) and all have produced the same result with the system freezing. The vast majority of times after a successful install, it will freeze right at boot up (i.e. white screen, grey apple, and spinning wheel) though several times I have actually gotten to both the login stage as well as in the desktop itself before it freezes. I have tried installing it both on internal and external hard drives yet it makes no difference. I am at a complete and utter loss as to what the heck to do. I have owned a mac of some sort since 1998 and I have never experienced a situation regarding an incremental OS update like this ever before.

Ok fair enough it is the full OS X 10.8.5. The first thing I would do is contact Apple and explain that you just purchased the full OS X 10.8.5 though due to the known bugs and its present inability to run on your particular model, you would instead prefer to have access and download the OS X 10.8.4 full version .app. The point being that with OS X 10.8.4 you will have the last Mountain Lion version known to work properly on your machine. Once that is in your possession, install it to insure that OS X 10.8.4 is functioning properly as it should. Once completed, come back and report your findings. I will check back with you then.

Maybe solved the problem on a MBPro 2007 3,1 17", OS X 10.8.5(combo updater). System boots with all other extensions as 10.8.5 versions, and, these as 10.8.4 versions -

IOPCIFamily.kext - the 10.8.5 version stopped both normal and safe booting

AppleAHCIPort.kext - the 10.8.5 version is incompatible with the 10.8.4 IOPCIFamily.kext

Because of errors showing in the console, "missing dependences" etc., and operational oddities, removed the new kexts -

  • AppleHSSPIHIDDriver.kext
  • AppleHSSPISupport.kext
  • AppleIntelLpssDmac.kext
  • AppleIntelLpssGspi.kext
  • AppleIntelLpssSpiController.kext

In way over my head, so could anyone with more knowledge please confirm and suggest better modifications...Thanks

Yes, I have tried the update

<< Anyone tried the OSXUpd10.8.5Supp.dmg >>. I installed it. Looks promising now, although the features of this update do not seem to imply that I could find a solution to our freezing problems. Nevertheless, the systems had been up and running for quite a while. It was a desperate move, suggested by your question. Just desperate, no rationale behing it. Let me summarize how things did develop. A lot of time spent on this issue and I am not sure it is solved. I will keep you and the forum updated, if you are interested.

I did not know the support package OSXUpd10.8.5Supp.dmg existed. I did install it yesterday, after I had started from scratch, namely:

1) had installed 10.8.5 previously during normal update cycle. Experienced freezing problem many many times for quite a while. last two weeks, more or less.

2) did reinstall of Mountain Lion on top of previous installation, downloading Mountain Lion again from App Store.

3) downloaded update to 10.8.5 again yesterday. Still experienced freezing problems. Disconnected Ethernet Cable. Started working on wifi only.

4) installed update to 10.8.5. still had freezing issues. was very discouraged.

5) read your note on OSXUpd10.8.5Supp.dmg. Installed it, worked this morning on wifi only for about 4 hours. decided to switch back to Ethernet cable. still working, no interruption. also with Power Supply disconnected, just working on battery. battery exhausted. turned power back in. still working. watched a Netflix movie.

Have started time machine to do full backup of this configuration, just in case. Hope it is a good one.

System is up and running:

Thanks for the info. Perhaps the Wifi/ethernet cable issue has been solved.

My issue is that laptop cannot successfully boot normally, or, in Safe mode. The supplemental update has not solved this problem. However, a fresh install, on an external drive, of 10.8.4 then updated with the Oct. 3rd 10.8.5 combo updater, does boot. So I quess the mess created by the original 10.8.5 updater is not fixed with the supplemental. Unfortunately I do not have a backup of the state before all the updating, so am looking at erase and install, or, wait until Mavericks.

I am just glad to be able to help for once after being the recipient so many times.

The supplemental update definitely has not solved my problem.

Using a clone, of my 10.8.4 updated with the original 10.8.5, which freezes during boot, I experimented by running a 10.8.4 full installer on it, and, voila, it boots.

Now I will try the new 10.8.5 combo supplemental on it to see what happens.

Hi tj_andersen, I read your post about overwriting all the kext files from 10.8.5 with those from 10.8.4 and noted that you then have to repair permissions. I know how to do so with individual files but was wondering how you did it with all of the kext files... individually or as a group? Can you repair permissions on an entire folder or did you have to enter commands for each individual file?

Thanks!

Kate
