MacBook Pro (2007) 3,1 & 10.8.5 freezing

While it goes without saying, firstly if you possess one of these MacBooks (I believe the unofficial model description of these MacBooks is the "Santa Rosa" model), do yourself a HUGE favor and make a back-up before attempting to upgrade to OS X 10.8.5.

Regarding my expereinces thus far attemtping to update:

At the onset, I can attest to the fact that my MacBook Pro runs OS X 10.8.4 flawlessly. Furthermore, the Apple Service Diagnostic disc for my 2007 MacBook Pro 15'' 3,1 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz A1226 MA895LL/A reports absolutely NO Hardware issues whatsoever including the memory check. I have tried EVERYTHING in performing ALL the obvious troubleshooting (i.e. permissions repair, SMC & PRAM rest, subtracting/adding memory modules etc.).

I have also installed OS X 10.8.5 in all three (3) possible configurations (software update, combo update and the full/clean Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5 .app install) and all have produced the same result with the system freezing. The vast majority of times after a successful install, it will freeze right at boot up (i.e. white screen, grey apple, and spinning wheel) though several times I have actually gotten to both the login stage as well as in the desktop itself before it freezes. I have tried installing it both on internal and external hard drives yet it makes no difference. I am at a complete and utter loss as to what the heck to do. I have owned a mac of some sort since 1998 and I have never experienced a situation regarding an incremental OS update like this ever before.

I just wanted to add to the comments that the Wifi on and off trick worked for me. My wifi had been off when the freezing started occuring. I was able to turn it back on and the MacBook Pro stayed responsive for the two hours I used it. Rebooted then turned off Wifi for the heck of it. It still worked fine. Turned Wifi back on after 30 minutes without issue. All seems to be acting normal. Although, now I'm gonna avoid ethernet cables like the plague!

Thanks to everyone who helped fix this for me!

HI, thanks for the tipp.

I know it is no real fix at all, but finally 10.9 is working fine on my macbookpro 3.1

2.2Ghz.

I also filed a Bug report to Apple, let´s see what happens.

My macbook Pro runs now stable for 15 hours, including waking up from sleep mode withyout any freeze.

But i am afraid to turn off Wifi..

I hope Apple will soon fix this.

Kind regards and thanks for all hints within the thread.

Dear all,

I tried the procedure described in this thread by to avoiding the ethernet cable, deleting the airport preferences and switiching the WLAN on and off. Basically I could work on a stable system for some hours and install OSX 10.9. But when going to sleep the system crashes again :-(

I'm using a MacBookPro3,1 (2007)

Anybody has an idea what else to do to get a stable system running 10.9?

Kind regards

While I had this issue with 10.8.5, I noticed that I was unable to startup my computer while the Magsafe connector is unpluged. Nothing would happen as I press the power button. Also, my computer was sutting down really quick while I was on battery power, as if the battery was loosing it's power in minutes.

Do others had these strange behaviour too?

For now, I'm sticking with 10.8.4. Less trouble, much more stable.

I hope one day they Apple will fix this in future updates of 10.9, but as our MacBook Pros 2007 are "vintage" hardware, Apple seems to be droping us down...

hey guys,

10 days on 10.9, so far without any problems *knocks on wood* having said that, I hesitate to deactivate the wireless lan cause of the recent report in this thread 😉

/edit: to give more details: 10.8.5 without the supplemental update installed, I manually replaced the kext files like described in this thread, upgraded directly to mavericks without clean install

The Nuflexion's solution didn't work for me.

The only solution for me to turn WiFi back on was start in single user mode (option-command-s) and create a script to turn on WiFi from command line at boot and before anything else.

I described the proces in the discusion "OS X 10.9 freeze when WiFi is turned off (POSSIBLE SOLUTION)" (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5524094?answerId=23816314022#23816314022) just in case.

An amendment to my previous post on 24 Oct,

There is no need to recycle the wifi (Step 1).

If it is on, it will not freeze.

Do Not Turn Off Wifi!

Also for those who needs the ethernet connection,

I'm able to connect using ethernet as long as the wifi is kept on.

Just go to network preference settings-> Set Service Order and set ethernet to have priority over wifi connections.

There is a suggestion to set IPv6 off for network connections here. Those who tried it can comment if that is the root cause?

Thanks.

Hi Everybody,

The problem is the same us too. Mid-2007 15" MacBookPros3,1s (more than one) are freezing after the 10.8.5 update or the 10.9 upgrade if their WiFi is switched off or if they are accesing the network with cable ethernet. There are countless threads (this being the longest) in the Apple Support Communities about this problem for the good part of the last two months and we still do not have a word from Apple acknowledging the problem.

There is no sense in this silence on Apple's part. Where should we be submitting our dissappointment in this lack of response?

Hello Refik,

As far as using WiFi with wired Ethernet, another post suggested altering the service order of these interfaces with Ethernet first:

System Preferences -> Network -> configure gear icon -> Set Service Order...

I made this change and have been able to switch seemlessly from Wi-Fi to wired and back. I also removed the Wi-Fi icon from the menu bar to prevent accidentally turning it off.

Ira
