MacBook Pro (2007) 3,1 & 10.8.5 freezing

While it goes without saying, firstly if you possess one of these MacBooks (I believe the unofficial model description of these MacBooks is the "Santa Rosa" model), do yourself a HUGE favor and make a back-up before attempting to upgrade to OS X 10.8.5.

Regarding my expereinces thus far attemtping to update:

At the onset, I can attest to the fact that my MacBook Pro runs OS X 10.8.4 flawlessly. Furthermore, the Apple Service Diagnostic disc for my 2007 MacBook Pro 15'' 3,1 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz A1226 MA895LL/A reports absolutely NO Hardware issues whatsoever including the memory check. I have tried EVERYTHING in performing ALL the obvious troubleshooting (i.e. permissions repair, SMC & PRAM rest, subtracting/adding memory modules etc.).

I have also installed OS X 10.8.5 in all three (3) possible configurations (software update, combo update and the full/clean Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5 .app install) and all have produced the same result with the system freezing. The vast majority of times after a successful install, it will freeze right at boot up (i.e. white screen, grey apple, and spinning wheel) though several times I have actually gotten to both the login stage as well as in the desktop itself before it freezes. I have tried installing it both on internal and external hard drives yet it makes no difference. I am at a complete and utter loss as to what the heck to do. I have owned a mac of some sort since 1998 and I have never experienced a situation regarding an incremental OS update like this ever before.

With high hopes I did update the system to 10.9.1, but the problem remains. The minute WiFi is disabled, whether the ethernet cable is connected or not, the system still freezes after few seconds or minutes.

As this problem has not been officially acknowledged by Apple, I still do not know whether a fix is in the works or not.

Keeping fingers crossed, I will wait for 10.9.2, which we know is in the works.

It has now been almost 3 months since the problem surfaced. And we are still wating for the acknowledgement or the solution.

Wish you all a happy new year.

Thought I'd add my experience to this thread:

Symptoms

- Mid-2007 MBP, started freezing after upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mavericks.

- Freeze often starts as a non-responsive web browser, followed by spinning beachball. During this time the computer becomes non-responsive except for mouse movement and occasionally the ability to move between windows.

- Usually becomes un-frozen after 10-15 minutes. At this point every mouse/keyboard action taken during the freeze is executed in rapid succession.

Fixes That Didn't Work

- Took it to the Apple Store. Genius Bar claims this is not a known issue. Suggested I first reinstall Mavericks, and if that doesn't work, erase the HD and do a clean install.

- Reinstall didn't fix anything. Based on user comments here (and similar threads), I decided not to waste my time doing a clean install.

- Keeping WiFi turned on and unplugging Ethernet seemed to decrease the problem's frequency, but did not solve it.

Fixes That Seem to Work

- "Turned off" spotlight indexing by removing all disk locations from the spotlight indexing preferences. Also used sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist

to remove spotlight entirely. FYI Spotlight can be reinstalled with sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist

- Disabling/removing Spotlight seems to fix the problem, as long as WiFi is turned on and connected.

- As a Spotlight alternative, I installed the Spotlight alternative called Found. It works great, but doesn't seem to return folders in the search results. Hopefully I'm just missing something in the preferences.

Ongoing Concerns & Uncertainties

- When I turn off WiFi and use Ethernet, the problem returns.

- Haven't determined whether WiFi needs to be connected to a network, or just enabled.

- Haven't determined whether Ethernet connection contributes to the problem, or it's just isolated to WiFi.

- I understand that disabling/removing Spotlight may have unintended consequences, because of the multitude (and increasing number) of apps that use the Spotlight index for their normal operation.

Hope that helps.

Update:

This week the freezing started happening more often - every hour or even every 30 minutes. For 5-10 minutes at a time, the computer becomes unusable.

This is with WiFi enabled and connected, without Ethernet connection, and Spotlight disabled. So, those things which once seemed like fixes, now seem not to be effective.

Contemplating a return to Snow Leopard.

My mid-2007 MacbookPro 17" also.

Upgraded to 10.0.3 and with both wireless and ethernet hooked up (wireless first priority) it seemed to be working normally. Then after about 1 1/2 hours, turned off wireless and after another thirty minutes the old problem came back.

You would think that after months of constant complaints from probably hundreds of customers, Apple would make an effort to either fix this or openly say they are not going to even try!
